My distractions , and how I battle with them.

Hello everyone !

Distractions are the things that normally divert our attention from a task or a goal and most times lead to reduced productivity and even hinder our progress.

I am a kind of person that gets distracted even in my thoughts, I can just be thinking of something and I just get carried away and not do the things that are expected of me.

My biggest distraction is my phone,. I am always glued to my phone almost everyday and i am just deeply invested into it that I sometimes find it hard to even sleep early. It's either I am listening to songs or I am watching romance nollywood movies on YouTube.

I was working on the farm one day , and I just decided to take a break from the work and go through my phone that I wasn't aware when the farm supervisor called me severally , to carry out a task. This really lead to so much problems for me as I was scolded and adviced not to make use of my phone on the farm again.

The main thing that gets me carried away all the time on my phone is my Social media apps . I can literally go for hours shuffling and moving from one social media app to the other , and my most used social media apps are twitter and Tik-tok. These social media apps can be so tempting, that once you get into them , you will be so focused and relaxed that you won't want to leave and you won't even be aware when you have spent up to 4 hours of the time going through vidoes and pictures , a time you should have made use of in doing alot of necessary and important things.

My friends are also part of my distractions. It is actually nice to have friends that you easily interact with, and go out with and have fun . However, it sometimes leads to distractions and also causes procrastination which is a key hinderance to productivity. They have been few times in school, whereby I will be having an assignments I will be submitting the next day, and I will go out with my friends with the mindset that I will do it later in the day.

At the end of the day, the night will come and I won't even remember and just sleep off, until the next day , when one of my mates will remind me of an assignment we were given , before I will now start looking for who has done his assignment for me to copy, in order to be able to submit on time.

I am obviously still battling with these distractions most especially the distraction I get from my phone, I need my phone to make money and earn a living so I can't say I will do without it for a whole day. However there have been some ways I have developed to minimise the time I spend on my phone. The first thing and major thing I do is to put my phone on "Flight Mode" while I am busy or even charging my phone. Putting my phone on flight mode has been very effective ,as I won't receive any messages or notifications that will distract me ,also when my phone is on "airplane mode" it will always tell anyone who calls me that my phone is switched off, even while my phone is on. Most times when people tell me they tried to get through to me and my phone was switched off, I will just tell them it was actually dead because there was no electricity to charge it.

As for the social media distraction, recently I have reduced the time I spend on tik-tok and even Snapchat. Now I find Snapchat annoying because of the keeping streaks issue , it annoys me alot. As for tik-tok, I have enjoyed spending my time on twitter and to also minimise my data , I have been more focused on twitter.

Twitter is now my most used social media app and the best way for me to reduce the time i spend on it, is to put off the app permission to send me notifications , by that way, i won't be easily tempted to go into the app frequently.

My most used apps apart from twitter are Ecency, and my notes , which is quite impressive.

Distractions from my friends has been a hard nut to crack for me. The method I have adopted to minimise these distractions is just to make sure I do my assignments ,wash my clothes on time,and after I am done with this necessary tasks, I can now focus on chatting and having funny conversations with them or going out with them to have fun.

Forming the habit of been determined and focused to carry out tasks, and setting a time frame to accomplish them has also been a way for me to stay away from my distractions.

I just think it’s all about being focused as you said. You could still put your phone on flight mode or dnd and still be distracted…. Or maybe it’s just me though.

But I have a habit of still checking my notifications no matter how focused I have to be on something…. You never know what opportunity you’ll miss

That’s a great strategy you’ve come up with. At least, in the end, you still find a away to do whatever you have to do before attending to your friends.
