I gained admission into the University two years ago and while leaving the house, my mum gave me so many warnings and advices. Part of it is that I have to be very careful of the people who I move with. She gave me these special advices because she knows the kind of girl I am.
On getting to school, I made new friends and during exams, I always notice that these girls come out in flying colors. They have never failed any examination and I go to their house or they come to my house. I have never seen them read so hard so how come the always pass their exams or are they naturally brilliant? I always ask myself this question.
One day, we all went to the board to check our results and I had to check for my friends and as usual, they passed the examination.
I was really happy that my friends could hear me and they all were giving some body languages that I seem not to understand.
I wasn’t really close to those girls so I had to let it slide but I knew something was wrong.
I got to the hostel and told my friends about it and they made me realize that it is nothing to worry about.
One day, I decided to plan a reading group with my friends and those other girls. On the scheduled date that we have planned to start, my close friends were nowhere to be found. I called their line but they were both switched off.
I started lamenting and said;
I’ve been calling my two friends and they have not been picking my calls. I can’t go back to the hostel to call them because I’d be stressed out and I may no longer be in the mood to read
The ladies told me not to bother. I read for the day even though I was not ready focused because I didn’t want my friends to see me as a bad person and I was wondering what must have happened to them so it won’t like I don’t care.
When we all finished reading, another good friend of mine came to me and said;
Bisola, make sure you don’t tell anyone what I’m about to tell you right now. Your friends don’t come to the library or any reading group and they pass all their exams. Don’t you think something is fishy?
Don’t you think that where there is smoke, there is fire?
I didn’t forget those words and I got home to ask my friends why they didn’t come to the library. They gave me a flimsy excuse and I knew there was something fishy. I wanted to start monitoring their moves but I could not. Truly, we move together almost all the time but there are times when they leave my side and they will be nowhere to be found.
One day, I raised a conversation and told my friends that I’d love to be like them. I didn’t mean it but I only wanted to know the secret behind my success and because the lady who gave me the information used to be their friend.
When I raised the conversation, my friends laughed at me and said I can’t. I was being very serious so they told me to go out with them in the evening and dress sexily.
I dressed up and we left for the venue. On getting there, I met some of my lecturers who are usually strict in school. I was shocked. My two friends are saying lecturers so it made me realize that is what my friends do to pass all their exams and come out in flying colors. I had to think back to what the lady told me in the library.
When it was time for another examination, they did the same thing by not reading and when the results came out, I failed.
I had to go meet the lecturer and he told me that he failed me because I left the venue almost immediately that night. He said he wanted to talk to me but I left in a hurry and he feels this is the best way to hold me down.
Education can be very crazy right here. I didn’t want to dance to his tunes so I had to tell my friends to beg their men so this man will at least leave me alone.
That was how I escaped. I wrote the course’s examination for the second time and I passed.
I never stopped being friends with these ladies. I just had to be more careful with them.
I realized that truly, where there is smoke, there is fire.
