When it comes to recruitment, every company will have this confusion. Many companies think that getting an experienced individual will be better because they will come with the industry experience already and it can be easy to onboard. For a fresher, it can take some time to get used to what working in a corporate job means. There are both pros as well as cons to hiring a fresher or an experienced individual.
I would say we will know the best choice only based on the individual's needs. Some teams will need someone based on the skill and some teams will need someone based on experience. When it comes to experience it would be someone who can start working on the job from day 1 itself. But a fresher can take a lot of time to get trained and also to adapt.
Freshers come with a fresh mind
If we look at the advantages, we know that freshers always comes with a fresh mind. Someone who is not part of the existing loop may think differently and the approaches can be different. Sometimes we may need that badly because a team may not be updated to the latest trend at all until someone is introducing it. Freshers usually come with a fresh mind from college so they add a good fun element to the work environment by removing the cloud of seriousness around the existing workers.
Experienced will have to unlearn and learn
Sometimes the problem with experienced individuals is that people will have to first unlearn what they have learned during their previous employment and slowly learn the new concepts. This can also take some time. One good thing is that an experienced individual will do a quick learning compared to a fresher because it is an already known domain. These days freshers are also very sharp and they can pick it up very fast.
Training them is what matters
Many recruiters fear to take freshers because they are either too lazy to train the freshers or they don't want to take the burden of training the individuals. But freshers are someone who can be quick and fast compared to experienced individuals because they are fresh minds. Sometimes we can also compare freshers to wet clay which can be molded into any shape we want for our needs.
Cost cutting with freshers
One of the biggest problems that bigger companies have right now is that they have many old employees who are in a very good package and it is very hard to send them home. Due to labor laws in many countries, it is not possible to send old employees home, and at the same time, it is hard to also allocate a budget to hire someone new. Many companies are eagerly waiting for their old employees to leave so that they can backfill with a small budget.
From this, we can understand that freshers are available for a very low cost compared to experienced people. Sometimes experienced people demand so much and it can be hard for the company to afford that. Sometimes for the cost of one experienced individual, it can even be possible to hire multiple freshers.
