Think well before you purchase a costly online course

in LeoFinanceyesterday (edited)

Knowledge is the most important thing if we have to keep ourselves updated with the latest trends and technology. Today learning is possible through several ways. One of the common ways of learning or gaining knowledge is through online learning. Many websites have courses and learning materials. People can get the best material to gain a particular knowledge. But before doing so, they have to consider a few things.

Check for the availability of free materials

It is not always necessary to pay for a course and get the knowledge. Sometimes knowledge is available for free from a good source and there is no harm in getting that knowledge from a free source. I usually prefer learning everything from free sources. I have never paid any money to learn something. Sometimes it will be tempting to pay for a course online and learn from that but I don't do it.

There is one thing that is still tempting for me which is paying for a Three.js course and learning animations with the help of that. The course was really convincing and I was almost there to buy it but then I realized that I don't have the time to stay in touch with that even after I complete my learning.

YouTube has almost everything

I usually do my learning from YouTube. There is always some reference or the other in YouTube and it is mostly the best place to learn something. I have a few favorite channels on YouTube from where I learn my coding. There are a few recommendations from those free channels to purchase a paid course or something. Maybe that can be helpful but only if it is highly necessary. Sometimes the paid material that we are looking forward to purchase would have been covered by someone else in a free video. So learning can happen through these methods.

Consult with an expert before purchasing

Having a mentor or having someone with whom we can get some suggestions or advice is always best. I would even say that getting the opinion from multiple people is also better than getting something from just one person. Finally, we can make our own decisions. If you are planning to purchase a course online for learning a new skill, maybe we can consult with an expert who either bought that course already or who is someone who can give us the necessary insight regarding the course.

There are always alternatives for everything. Sometimes the alternatives can be cheaper but sometimes it can be costly or the best. So the final decision might be ours but before taking that decision, it is best to consult with an expert.

There is now a growing trend here in y country of selling empty digital courses where people will usually flex their online earnings, and then selling their online course to make the product and selling it, while the product they sell is actually the empty course.

As a freebie myself, I tend to look for the free one, before thinking of purchasing any course, although I believe that there are a few legit and good one to one course that really wortht the money.

Yes, totally agree, I once followed a paid trading course but it didn't really contain anything that I couldn't have learned from YouTube, also learning complex things just takes time

i think also chatgpt or deepseek nowadays can be good sources of information with all the knowledge they have stored

Being involved with Blockchain has given me a sense to look 'beyond' the course and see who the teacher is, if they offer support once purchased, how in depth the course work is compared to Youtube videos, and to see if the guide WILL solve the issue I am having.

I recently talked to a game designer and he said he paid a hefty amount for a guide on how to generate large spaces in Unreal Engine and he said the teacher was lacking in detail, didn't have much information in the blueprints on how to recreate, and whatever could be generated wasn't malleable for him to make use of. No support or community was involved with the guide to troubleshoot or brainstorm solutions or ideas.

Buying something thinking it'll solve the issue and receiving random instructions with no description is the worst.

I think researching every aspect of a guide before purchasing is a good piece of advice. Thank you for sharing it! Hopefully the words of wisdom shared in this post will save somebody the frustration of not getting 'exactly' what they paid for.

I also never buy courses (there are only charlatans around) - but my wife buys everything. She has already been a psychologist and a speech therapist, now she has bought a course on "how to write your own book and sell it" and many other things = 0 result (they all promise fast learning + promotion, and people believe in these fairy tales!)
The main thing is that my wife never sees this message 😆😬🤣

After being scammed by a trader guru, I considered starting my own course-selling business. LOL!!
The funny thing almost all of the courses that are being sold on the platform are already available on free sites with much better instructors. And some are so good that they interact with the audience in the YT comments section.
CodeWithHarry, TradingLabs, and many dedicated YouTubers publish quality content with clarity.
But there are some pro-level courses available which as you mentioned should be joined only after consulting

I also learn a lot of things from YouTube, once paid for a course and almost everything about that course was still referring us to go watch the tutor's videos on YouTube

There was a time when I bought a course for almost $50 just to find the full course on YouTube
It was painful

It’s great to see the value placed on free resources like YouTube, which often provide high-quality education.

Consulting experts before making financial commitments can also help ensure that we make informed decisions about our learning paths.

Ultimately, the goal is to prioritize knowledge and stay updated with trends while being smart about our choices

For a while now, I have even stop purchasing any online course because it looks like everyone of them are trash
