I have been watching some medical web series like Dr. House and Good Doctor, and when I watch these things, I ask so many questions to myself. I don't know if I learn anything medical from these web series, but at least they make me think rationally and help me look for something and learn about a topic.
Today I was curious to find out if it was possible to survive with just pills and supplements alone. I know a few people who stayed with water and no proper wood in their old age. I remember my grandfather also used to eat one time or a maximum of two light meals a day. He lived till 88 and he used to say that it was the secret of his longevity. He never stresses his digestive system. I have seen him fasting or taking light food on certain days when he doesn't feel like eating. Many Yogis are living in India who do similar things and I wanted to check if this is medically possible.
Lack of nutrition
I have to admit that I used to be like this before COVID. I used to take only 2 meals a day and keep my stomach empty for about 15 to 17 hours. This was my practice and I was very healthy and had no issues. After COVID because of the PTSD that I had, I started eating more and my eating routine changed. That's when I had a feeling that maybe I had an anxiety disorder because of malnutrition. I was only able to guess a few things but I couldn't get into any conclusion.
If we take only pills and supplements, we will be able to assist out body with the necessary nutrition but it may not be enough for the body. Only a whole food can have all the types of nutrition in the right value. There are research works being made to find out if people can survive with just pills and supplements but so far there are no medical evidence to prove anything concrete.
Digestive system is a full system
Eating food alone is not the function of a digestive system. The digestion process starts from our mouth and it is a huge process that involves both physical aspects and mental aspects associated with that. Eating carbohydrates and fiber-rich food makes digestion easier and bowel movement easier. If we consume pills and supplements, we may not be able to trigger the bowel movement properly and the system might get affected.
Eating is also a Psychological thing
People consume food only only to get the nutrition required but it is also important for several other reasons. It is a psychological and a social thing. In many families, the members of the family get together in a table and have their meals. This has proven to increase the social interaction inside a family. In many cultures having food is also considered an important thing culturally and they not only do it alone but they invite guests and offer food to others. If we reduce or simplify the process of eating food and gaining the necessary nutrients from pills and supplements, we are breaking this cultural thing and it can disturb the psychological satisfaction one gets from eating.
