The second floor of the Antonio Jose de Sucre House-Museum still had something interesting to show me: an area where an old book lay, and next to it a quill pen with ink, just as they were used in colonial times. Here, visitors could experience what it was like to write by hand—that art of handwriting and calligraphy that has been lost over the years.
Although I had never used a quill pen before, I wanted to transport my mind back to centuries past and recreate that time when people communicated through letters. With a bit of trepidation, I dipped the tip of the quill into the inkwell and wrote a few words; at first, I felt it wasn’t coming out right, so I kept refining my technique until I managed to write a legible message.
After that experience, at the end of that space, there is a large wooden cabinet that takes up a significant portion of the wall; on display there are fragments of pottery and objects that belonged to the Sucre family. The guide who accompanied me told me that these pieces were found while excavating the rubble of the original house to lay the foundations of this new structure; therefore, they represent relics of the cultural heritage of the colonial era.
Leaving here, we entered the last room on the second floor, the “Teresita Sucre” Movie Theater. This modern space is one of the museum’s projects and, therefore, does not represent the original house. This room serves a dual purpose: it is a meeting room for the institution’s staff, where they also receive training through courses and workshops. It’s also a space dedicated to culture, as educational films are screened for young children so they can learn in a fun way.
I then walked down the hallway to the ground floor. I couldn’t help but admire the beautiful furnishings; in one area, there’s even an antique piece of furniture with a very elegant gilded mirror that belonged to the Sucre family. Unfortunately, one corner of it was broken after it fell during an accident.
This furniture definitely has its charm. Although I imagined myself living in a grand colonial-era mansion, I then realized that keeping these spaces clean must have been an exhausting task—especially with wide-open inner courtyards or with horses passing from the stable to the front door and back again. El segundo piso de la Casa-museo Antonio José de Sucre todavía tenía algo interesante para mostrarme, un área donde reposa un libro antiguo y a su lado una pluma con tinta, tal como se utilizaba en la época colonial. El guía que me acompañó me dijo que estos trozos los hallaron excavando en los escombros de la casa original para levantar los cimientos de esta nueva estructura, por tanto, representan reliquias del patrimonio cultural de la época colonial.
Al salir de acá entramos al último cuarto del segundo piso, la Sala de cine: Teresita Sucre, este moderno espacio es uno de los proyectos del museo y, por lo tanto, no es una representación de la casa original. Este recinto tiene una doble función, sala de reuniones del personal adscrito a esta institución donde además reciben formación a través de cursos y talleres. También es un espacio dedicado a la cultura porque se proyectan películas educativas para los más pequeños, de modo que puedan aprender de forma divertida.
Luego caminé al pasillo para descender a planta baja, no pude evitar contemplar las hermosas instalaciones, incluso en una parte se encuentra un mueble antiguo con un espejo dorado muy elegante que perteneció a la familia Sucre, lamentablemente se rompió en una esquina tras sufrir un accidente al caerse.
Este mobiliario definitivamente tiene su encanto, si bien me imaginé viviendo en una gran casona en la época colonial, luego caí en cuenta que mantener la limpieza de los espacios ha debido ser una tarea agotadora, sobre todo con patios internos muy abiertos o con los caballos pasando del establo hacia la puerta principal y viceversa. El casco colonial de Cumaná nos ofrece varias alternativas para pasar un buen rato tal como lo he mostrado en mis publicaciones.
