ENGLISH VERSION

Hello, dear Hive travelers! If, like me, you're passionate about discovering hidden corners that hide fascinating stories, today I invite you to explore a place that seems frozen in time: the La Reunión Pharmacy Museum, also known as Sarrá Pharmacy, in the heart of Old Havana.

Prepare for a tour where the architecture, centuries-old furniture, and unusual pharmaceutical artifacts will transport us to the splendor of a bygone era.

As you walk down the charming Brasil Street (which Havana residents call Teniente Rey), the three-story colonial building stands out among the cobblestones and colorful facades.

Above its entrances, golden letters elegantly announce: "SARRÁ." This name is no coincidence: the pharmacy was founded in 1853 by Catalan apothecaries Sarrá and Catalá, and by the beginning of the 20th century, it was already the most important pharmaceutical business in the Americas, run by Sarrá.

Its fame grew so much that, over time, Havana residents stopped calling it "La Reunión" and simply referred to it as "Sarrá Pharmacy."

As I crossed the threshold, I felt like I'd stepped back a century. The beautiful carved wood of the shelves, the gigantic display cases filled with porcelain bottles with colorful labels, the stained-glass windows that filter the light in vibrant hues and create a magical atmosphere, and the Tiffany-style ceiling lamps that reaffirm its elegance.

Every detail speaks to a time when the pharmacy was not just a business, but a place steeped in science and art.

I was struck by the metal armrests and footrests on the counter, designed to allow customers to wait comfortably while protecting the counter. What a great idea!

The tools used at that time are also on display. Among the objects on display are microscopes, porcelain water filters, autoclaves, scales, and Bakelite flasks (a revolutionary material at the time).

What made this pharmacy unique? The quality of its medicines had a secret, its star ingredient: the water from an underground spring that flowed beneath the building. Its medicinal properties enhanced its formulas. Because of this, the fame of its remedies crossed borders.

The museum is organized into three spaces that tell different aspects of its history:

The first room corresponds to The Original Pharmacy: Here everything remains intact, from the neo-Gothic furniture to the bottles bearing the emblem "La Reunión".

The second room houses archaeological objects: This corner is a treasure trove for the curious. It exhibits bottles excavated from Havana houses, some containing remains of 19th-century medicines. The labels reveal details about their contents.

The third room is a bridge between past and present. Today they sell natural products, spices, and dried medicinal plants, keeping alive the tradition that made the pharmacy famous.

Among so many wonders, what moved me most were the original prescription books. Their yellowed pages, handwritten in very legible handwriting, contain formulas with minute details: the name of the doctor who prescribed them, the exact dosages, and even corrections in the margin.

I could see the date on one of its pages: November 17, 1932. What a relic!

The Sarrá Pharmacy is not just a museum; it's a time capsule that speaks to us of innovation, art, and dedication. For lovers of history, architecture, or simply places with soul, this place is a must-see in Havana.

I'd love to hear how you enjoyed this tour in the comments. I'll be happy to read them.

See you soon!
