This summer I set a goal for myself: to be a tourist in my own city. Often, what we have closest to us is what we neglect the most. I love getting lost in its streets and experiencing history with every step. And if there's one thing that has always fascinated me, it's fortresses. These imposing stone constructions were erected with the purpose of protecting and defending the city from attacks coming from the sea.
Among the city's fortresses, I owed a debt to one in particular: the Castle of Santo Domingo de Atarés. Yes, I knew of its existence, I often drove by, but I never found the opportunity to visit. This summer was the time to settle that debt with myself.
Just getting there is an experience in itself. To reach the fortress, you have to climb a steep hill called Loma de Soto, which is quite a feat under the intense summer sun.
Upon reaching the entrance, a wooden drawbridge immediately transported me back in time. Through a mechanism of chains and counterweights, it isolated the fortress, turning the surrounding moat into an insurmountable barrier.
The Castle itself is a formidable structure. Hexagonal in shape, it is smaller than its larger siblings, El Morro and La Punta, but no less imposing. Its thick stone walls are ready for military use. It was built in 1767 and its mission was to protect the bottom of Havana Bay, a vulnerable point for the city.
As you climb its stone stairs, you reach the top, where the views are simply spectacular. From there, you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the bay and part of the city—we can even see the golden dome of the Capitol! It's a privileged vantage point that immediately makes you understand the strategic importance of this place.
However, what made this visit absolutely unforgettable was discovering that the fortress now houses a fascinating museum. And not just a weapons or military history museum, but a permanent exhibition I hadn't even heard of: The Leonardo Da Vinci Room.
Upon entering, I was completely surprised. I discovered the story of the most brilliant man of the Renaissance. The room is entirely dedicated to this genius, and it's no ordinary exhibition. On display are models of machinery and tools that were built based on his original plans and designs.
Being able to see them and imagine their workings was a very beautiful experience.
There were his flying machines, with those wings imitating the anatomy of birds and bats. He designed the bicycle 300 years before its appearance, chariots for storming city walls, escalators, cranes, diving suits, and other machinery, demonstrating his genius and profound knowledge of physics.
I stopped in front of the model of his "ideal city." It was a very interesting and visionary project in which Da Vinci reflected the need for waterways and wide-open spaces to prevent the plagues that ravaged the cities of his time.
Also on display alongside these engineering marvels are reproductions of some of his most famous paintings, always a pleasure to behold. To enrich the experience, a documentary video chronicled his life and work, reflecting on each of the pieces he had just admired.
I left with that feeling of fulfillment that only comes from a day in which you've learned something new, in which you've surprised yourself. I felt rejuvenated, my mind full of ideas, and my soul recharged.
The visit to Atarés Castle was much more than I expected. Not only did I repay a debt to a historic site, but it also taught me a lesson: true strength lies not only in stone walls, but in human ingenuity capable of defying nature.

Este verano me propuse una meta: ser turista en mi propia ciudad. A menudo, lo que tenemos más cerca es lo que más descuidamos. Me encanta perderme por sus calles y sentir la historia a cada paso. Y si hay algo que siempre me ha fascinado, son las fortalezas. Esas imponentes construcciones de piedra que se erigieron con el propósito de proteger y defender la ciudad de los ataques que venían por mar.
Entre las fortalezas que tiene la ciudad, tenía una deuda pendiente con una en particular: el Castillo de Santo Domingo de Atarés. Sí, sabía de su existencia, pasaba muchas veces cerca, pero nunca encontraba la oportunidad para visitarlo. Este verano era el momento de saldar esa deuda conmigo misma.
El acceso ya es toda una experiencia. Para llegar a la fortaleza hay que subir una loma muy pendiente, llamada la Loma de Soto, lo cual bajo el intenso sol veraniego es una proeza.
Al llegar a su entrada, un puente elevadizo de madera me transportó inmediatamente al pasado. A través de un mecanismo de cadenas y contrapesos permitía aislar la fortaleza convirtiendo el foso que lo rodea en una barrera infranqueable.
El Castillo en sí es una estructura formidable. De forma hexagonal, es más pequeño que sus hermanos mayores El Morro o La Punta, pero no por ello menos imponente. Sus muros de piedra gruesos listos para su función militar. Fue construido en 1767 y su misión era proteger el fondo de la bahía de La Habana, un punto vulnerable para la ciudad.
Al subir por sus escaleras de piedra, se llega a la parte superior donde las vistas son simplemente espectaculares.
Desde allí se domina una panorámica maravillosa de la bahía y parte de la ciudad, ¡hasta divisamos la cúpula dorada del Capitolio! Es un mirador privilegiado que te hace entender de inmediato la importancia estratégica de este lugar.
Sin embargo, lo que hizo que esta visita sea absolutamente inolvidable fue descubrir que la fortaleza alberga hoy un museo fascinante. Y no solo un museo de armas o de historia militar, sino una exposición permanente que no conocía: La Sala de Leonardo Da Vinci.
Al entrar, mi sorpresa fue mayúscula. Me encontré con la historia del hombre más brillante del Renacimiento. La sala está dedicada por completo a este genio, y no es una exposición cualquiera. Se exhiben maquetas de maquinarias y herramientas que se construyeron basándose en sus planos y diseños originales. Y poder verlas e imaginar su mecanismo fue una experiencia muy bonita.
Allí estaban sus máquinas de volar, con esas alas imitando la anatomía de los pájaros y murciélagos. El diseño de la bicicleta 300 años antes de su aparición, carros para asaltar murallas, escaleras mecánicas, grúas, trajes de buceo y otras maquinarias, demostrando su genialidad y conocimiento profundo de la física.
Me detuve frente a la maqueta de su "ciudad ideal", era un proyecto muy interesante y visionario donde Da Vinci reflejaba la necesidad de los canales de agua y los espacios amplios para evitar las pestes que asolaban las ciudades de su época.
También junto a estas maravillas de la ingeniería, se exhiben reproducciones de algunas de sus pinturas más famosas, siempre es un placer contemplarlas. Para enriquecer la experiencia, un video documental narraba su vida y obra, reflejando cada una de las piezas que acababa de admirar.
Salí de allí con esa sensación de plenitud que solo te da un día en el que has aprendido algo nuevo, en el que te has sorprendido a ti misma. Me sentí rejuvenecida, con la mente llena de ideas y la batería del alma recargada.
La visita al Castillo de Atarés fue mucho más de lo que esperaba. No solo saldé una deuda con un lugar histórico, sino que me regaló una lección: la verdadera fortaleza no está solo en los muros de piedra, sino en el ingenio humano capaz de desafiar la naturaleza.
