Hello, dear travelers. Today I want to share with you the discovery of an architectural gem hidden in the heart of Old Havana. It's not easy to find at first glance, but once you pass through its discreet entrance, you are transported to a world of beauty and spirituality that seems straight out of a Byzantine tale.

This is the Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas of Myra, a small but impressive cathedral and the only Greek Orthodox church on the island.

Located behind the Convent of Saint Francis of Assisi, at the end of the Mother Teresa Garden, you can also access it through the back door at the intersection of Churruca Street and Avenida del Puerto.

From the first moment, its Byzantine-style architecture captivated me. I was struck by its structure and construction with stones and red bricks from our island. The design of its front is beautiful. Above its wooden door, the stone is carved with Greek-style human figures, and on both sides are glass windows to let in natural light.

Its exterior is fascinating, but the interior is simply stunning. Upon entering the door, I was greeted by a spectacle of colors and light. On its white walls, there are colorful drawings and many paintings with biblical images.

The lamps hanging from the ceiling are beautiful, and the furniture is carved with great elegance and precision. In every detail, we see the symbol of the double-headed eagle, an emblem of Orthodox tradition. This symbol also decorates the floor in the center of the room.

It was built using ancient techniques; its barrel vaults and dome are striking. Everything is on a very small scale, and that's what impressed me most.

What struck me most was the main altar, a masterpiece of carved wood with enchanting exquisiteness. I learned it was sculpted by Cuban experts. Unlike Catholic churches, there are no statues here, but rather sacred icons, each telling a story of profound faith.

This church was founded on January 20, 2002, by the Greek Orthodox Archbishopric, as recorded for eternity in a description that appears on a slab very near the entrance.

Outside, under the shade of the trees, I discovered a small baptistery of colorful ceramics, surrounded by murals with religious motifs. It is a corner full of symbolism and peace.

This cathedral is not only a beautiful work of art, but a living place. Every day, it is visited by believers and also by the public who want to learn about this unique temple. During my visit, a parishioner shared with me that its attendees are not only Greeks; many are former Catholics or even people with no previous faith who found a new path here.

If you visit Havana, be sure to seek out this corner of Byzantium in the Caribbean. It's a reminder that beauty isn't always found in the monumental, but in the authentic, in those places where art, history, and faith magically intertwine.

For me, the Cathedral of San Nicolás de Mira is one of Cuba's most authentic gems. I hope you enjoyed visiting it.

See you soon!

Un rincón bizantino en La Habana: La Catedral Ortodoxa de San Nicolás de Mira

Hola, queridos viajeros.
