Cienfuegos always welcomes me with a mixture of solemnity and freshness, as if its streets knew how to keep secrets while still smiling. This time, my visit had a special note. I was accompanied by my niece, and together we ascended to the viewpoint of the Ferrer Palace, an architectural gem that dominates the heart of the city. Although I had visited it on other occasions, this experience gave me a new perspective, both literally and emotionally.

The tour began in José Martí Park, a space of great importance to the province of Cienfuegos. Walking through it is like walking through history. The surrounding architecture can be seen through the trees. The Arco de los Obreros, my favorite piece, the statue of Martí, the roundabout… each element seems to tell a chapter of the city.
Declared a National Monument and World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the park is a setting for gatherings and celebrations, and Cienfuegos residents proudly display it. It marks the city's kilometer zero. Its two blocks embody the elegance of the neoclassical urbanism that distinguishes Cienfuegos's main buildings.

From there, the Ferrer Palace rises on a corner like a refined sentinel. Built between 1917 and 1918 by merchant José Ferrer Sires, the building is a prime example of Cuban eclecticism, with modernist details and a dome that seems to float above the city—transformed into a lookout from which all of Cienfuegos can be seen. This building has known moments of splendor, hosting illustrious guests such as Enrico Caruso, and at other times has suffered complete abandonment. Yet thanks to restoration efforts, its dignity has been restored.

The interior of the palace still preserves traces of its former opulence: marble finishes, artistic wrought ironwork on the staircases, and glazed tiles. Today, it serves as the House of Culture, and although daily bustle has replaced the luxury of the past, the building remains a symbol of what Cienfuegos once was—and of what it still aspires to become.

As we descended, we crossed Martí Park once again—this time with a different gaze. The experience at the lookout was wonderful; I discovered places I hadn’t noticed before. Sharing that moment with my niece was like opening a window before my eyes to the beauty and echo of Cienfuegos’ streets.
This city, with its serene architecture and the cleanliness that defines it, continues to teach me that each visit can be a revelation. And Ferrer Palace, from its lookout, invites us to see beyond—to discover what remains when we truly pay attention.
