There are places you think you know, until something (a sculpture, a shadow, a detail) completely changes your perspective. That's what happened to me as I approached Plaza de San Francisco de Asís, a place I've visited many times, but this time it revealed a new corner to me: the Monument to the Benefactors of the City, a majestic column that rises at the back of the Lonja del Comercio (Commerce Exchange).
I had never noticed this work before. Carved in stone, with symbolic reliefs and crowned by a cross, the column seems to tell a story about those who contributed to the soul of Havana. It is surrounded by panels with coats of arms and figures that remind us of the city's spiritual, artistic, and civic legacy. Discovering it was like finding a forgotten page in a book I thought I had read in its entirety.
Hay lugares que uno cree conocer, hasta que algo (una escultura, una sombra, un detalle) cambia la perspectiva por completo. Eso fue lo que me ocurrió mientras me acercaba a la Plaza de San Francisco de Asís, un sitio que he recorrido muchas veces, pero que esta vez me reveló un rincón nuevo, donde se encuentra el Monumento a los benefactores de la ciudad, una columna majestuosa que se alza en la parte trasera de la Lonja del Comercio.
Nunca antes había reparado en esta obra. Tallada en piedra, con relieves simbólicos y coronada por una cruz, la columna parece contar una historia sobre quienes contribuyeron al alma de La Habana. Está rodeada por paneles con escudos y figuras nos recuerda el legado espiritual, artístico y cívico de la ciudad. Descubrirla fue como encontrar una página olvidada en un libro que creía haber leído completo.
When you look at this monument, it reveals figures carved in stone in a gesture of giving and building. The background, the windows of the Lonja del Comercio (Commerce Exchange), also capture the eye. It's impressive to see how each floor exhibits a variation in design. Architecture becomes a language, and both elements intertwine to tell the story of a city that honors both beauty and generosity.
Al observar este monumento revela figuras talladas en piedra en gesto de dar y construir. No sé le puede restar importancia al fondo, los ventanales de la Lonja del Comercio que también capturan la mirada, es impresionante ver cómo cada piso exhibe una variación en el diseño. La arquitectura se vuelve lenguaje, y en ambos elementos se entrelazan para contar la historia de una ciudad que honra tanto la belleza como la generosidad.
Directly opposite the monument stands the sober and elegant Customs Building. Its symmetrical façade, marked by uniform floors and an arched entrance, gives it an elegant touch. It is crowned by a clock that, although I'm not sure if it still works, still makes a statement in the urban landscape. This building was once a nerve center of port and commercial activity. Today, its architecture continues to bear witness to the comings and goings of generations—this was my other discovery.
Justo frente al monumento, se alza el sobrio y elegante Edificio de la Aduana. Su fachada simétrica, marcada por pisos uniformes y una entrada en arco le da un toque elegante. Se corona con un reloj que aunque no tengo certeza si aún funciona, sigue marcando presencia en el paisaje urbano. Esta edificación, fue en su momento un centro neurálgico de la actividad portuaria y comercial. Further ahead, the Plaza de San Francisco de Asís continues to expand before my eyes. It has always made me feel as if I were walking through the 17th century. Its colonial architecture, its sculptures, and the slow pace that surrounds it transport me to another era. But what attracts me most about this plaza is the tradition of the pigeons that are always everywhere. Many of us know it as "Pigeon Square." I like watching the children feed them, and they don't get scared; they just flutter around and walk among the people.
Más adelante , continúa expandiéndose ante mi vista la Plaza de San Francisco de Asís , siempre me ha hecho sentir como si caminara por el siglo XVII, su arquitectura colonial, sus esculturas y el ritmo pausado que la envuelve me transportan a otra época. Pero lo que más me atrae de esta plaza es esa tradición de las palomas que siempre están por doquier , muchos la conocemos como "La Plaza de las Palomas" . Me gusta ver cómo los niños las alimentan y ellas no se asustan se quedan revoloteando y caminando entre las personas.
Another element that fascinates me about this square is the Lions' Fountain. There, amidst the sound of water and the flight of pigeons, one finds a peace that's difficult to describe. It's a place where time seems to stand still and where the present blends with the past.
Otro elemento que me fascina de esta plaza es la Fuente de los Leones. Allí, entre el sonido del agua y el vuelo de las palomas, encuentro una paz difícil de describir. Es un lugar donde el tiempo parece detenerse y donde el presente se mezcla con el pasado.
All kinds of vehicles travel along the port avenue that runs alongside it, but there are some excellently preserved vintage cars, reinforcing the feeling of having stepped back in time. Horse-drawn carriages are also abundant in this area, offering tours to tourists so that Havana's history can be lived rather than told.

As I walked away and looked back from a distance at the Lonja del Comercio, I could see its dome, a symbol of prosperity and republican elegance. And there stood Mercury, faithful guardian of the city, with his winged helmet and his light step, as if still running between transactions and words. His silhouette stands out against the sky: a classical god in a modern setting, a witness to the elegance that soars in Havana.
