Today I want to share with you a place that connects me deeply to my roots. That's how I feel: African culture has shaped Cuba for centuries, and it remains an essential part of who we are today. We are proud of that living heritage.
It's impossible to talk about Cuban culture without intertwining it with African culture. Its dances, its rhythms, its beliefs... everything is still present. The religious syncretism that characterizes our country is also due to that powerful and resilient influence.
Well, if you walk down Obrapía Street and reach number 157, a few meters before Mercaderes Street, you will find the Casa de África (House of Africa). It was a discovery for me this summer, thanks to the Rutas y Andares project, which I discovered somewhat late... but which opened new horizons for me.

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes un lugar que me conecta profundamente con mis raíces. Así lo siento, la cultura africana ha marcado a Cuba durante siglos, y sigue siendo parte esencial de lo que somos hoy. Nos sentimos orgullosos de esa herencia.
Es imposible hablar de la cultura cubana sin entrelazarla con la africana. Sus bailes, sus ritmos, sus creencias… todo sigue presente. El sincretismo religioso que caracteriza a nuestro país también se lo debemos a esa influencia poderosa y resiliente.
Pues bien, si caminas por la calle Obrapía y llegas al número 157, unos metros antes de la calle Mercaderes, encontrarás la Casa de África. Fue un descubrimiento para mí este verano, gracias al proyecto Rutas y Andares, que conocí algo tarde… pero que me abrió nuevos horizontes.
Although the institution has existed since 1986, I had never visited it before. It is currently undergoing renovations, but still welcomes visitors. It retains the architectural style of the late 19th century, with a sober elegance that invites you to linger.
The house was built in 1887, more than a hundred years after its neighbor, the Casa de la Obra Pía, which I have already shown you in other posts. Although its design is simpler, it is still charming. The narrow streets on this block make it impossible to take a frontal photo that captures its entire facade, painted green as an evocation of the abundant vegetation of the African continent.
Aunque la institución existe desde 1986, nunca antes la había visitado. Actualmente se encuentra en proceso de reparación, pero aun así recibe visitantes. Conserva el estilo arquitectónico de finales del siglo XIX, con una elegancia sobria que invita a detenerse.
La casa fue construida en 1887, más de cien años después que su vecina, la Casa de la Obra Pía, que ya les he mostrado en otros posts. Aunque su diseño es más sencillo, no deja de ser encantador. Las calles angostas de esta cuadra impiden tomar una foto frontal que capture toda su fachada, pintada de verde como evocación de la vegetación abundante del continente africano.
Upon entering, the first thing we encounter is a large map of the African continent, followed by an impressive ethnographic collection that includes more than two thousand pieces, from monumental wood carvings to tiny objects laden with symbolism. It is the only collection of its kind in Cuba and offers a window into the cultural diversity, myths, legends, and heritage of Africa.
Al entrar, lo primero que nos recibe es un gran mapa del continente africano, seguido por una impresionante colección etnográfica que incluye más de dos mil piezas, desde monumentales tallas en madera hasta objetos minúsculos cargados de simbolismo. Es la única colección de su tipo en Cuba, y ofrece una ventana a la diversidad cultural, los mitos, leyendas y patrimonios de África.
I really liked the layout of the space. There's a room displaying numerous wood carvings and deeply representative masks, each with a symbolic force that invites you to stop and observe.
Me gustó mucho la distribución del espacio. Hay una sala con numerosas tallas de madera y máscaras muy representativas, cada una con una fuerza simbólica que invita a detenerse y observar.
There are metal works exhibiting highly expressive pieces. Among them, my favorite was a sculpture that seems to represent a ceremonial procession: elongated, stylized figures advancing in procession carrying umbrellas, instruments, and a palanquin. There is something deeply symbolic in their gestures and arrangement, as if capturing the rhythm of an ancestral celebration. This work, mounted on a wooden base, conveyed a sense of movement and community that still resonates with me.
Existen obras en metal, donde se exhiben piezas de gran fuerza expresiva. Entre ellas, mi preferida fue una escultura que parece representar un cortejo ceremonial: figuras alargadas, estilizadas, que avanzan en procesión portando sombrillas, instrumentos y un palanquín. Hay algo profundamente simbólico en sus gestos y disposición, como si capturaran el ritmo de una celebración ancestral. Esta obra, montada sobre una base de madera, me transmitió una sensación de movimiento y comunidad que aún resuena en mí.
Colorful traditional costumes are on display, each with textures and designs evoking celebrations. Alongside these, musical instruments enrich the experience: string instruments and a giant marimba, whose wooden slats invite you to imagine vibrant, ceremonial rhythms. The entire ensemble creates an immersive atmosphere, where music, art, and identity intertwine with power and beauty.
Se exhiben vestuarios tradicionales llenos de colorido, cada uno con texturas y diseños que evocan celebraciones. Junto a ellos, se presentan instrumentos musicales que enriquecen la experiencia, instrumentos de cuerdas y una marimba gigante que con sus láminas de madera invita a imaginar ritmos vibrantes y ceremoniales. Todo el conjunto crea una atmósfera envolvente, donde la música, el arte y la identidad se entrelazan con fuerza y belleza.
Everything about this house captivates me: its exhibition, its architecture... It has beautiful interior hallways, covered by glass skylights that protect from water when it rains, allowing access to the garden without getting wet. I'll show you this space later.
De esta casa me cautiva todo, su exposición, su arquitectura… Tiene unos pasillos interiores hermosos, cubiertos por claraboyas de cristal que protegen del agua cuando llueve, permitiendo el acceso al jardín sin mojarse, este espacio se los mostraré más adelante.
Visiting Casa África was a revelatory experience. I allowed myself to reconnect with my roots, learn, and feel part of a history that continues to beat in every corner of Cuba.
