Caminar por La Habana es tener la sensación de estar en una película, pero no una de esas modernas con efectos especiales, sino una de esas de blanco y negro que daban en la televisión los sábados por la tarde, con un poco de rayas y el sonido un poco distorsionado, pero que te atrapaban igual. La Habana es eso, una película viviente, con sus edificios y sus calles como protagonistas.

Walking through Havana feels like being in a movie, but not one of those modern ones with special effects. Instead, it's like one of those black-and-white films they used to show on Saturday afternoon television, a bit scratchy with slightly distorted sound, but they captivated you just the same. Havana is exactly that—a living movie, with its buildings and streets as the main characters.
Lo primero que te choca, para bien, es el contraste. Ves un edificio enorme, que en su día fue un palacete de esos con columnas y molduras, y ahora al lado tiene una casa de colores, con la pintura descascarillada pero con una persiana verde que brilla al sol. No hay nada perfecto, y es justo esa imperfección lo que hace que te enamores. Un capitalino te dirá que su ciudad está "vencida", y tiene razón, pero es una belleza vencida, de esas que han vivido mucho y tienen arrugas que cuentan historias.
The first thing that strikes you, in a good way, is the contrast. You see an enormous building, once a mansion with columns and moldings, and right next to it stands a colorful house, its paint peeling but featuring a green window shutter that gleams in the sun. Nothing is perfect, and it's precisely that imperfection that makes you fall in love. A Havana resident will tell you their city is "worn-down," and they're right, but it's a dignified, time-worn beauty, the kind that has lived a lot and has wrinkles that tell stories.
Paseando por el Centro habanero, levantas la cabeza y ves balcones de madera torneada, rejas de hierro forjado que parecen encajes, capiteles que ya no sostienen nada pero que aún se mantienen firmes, como viejos soldados. Hay edificios que parecen de París, otros que tiran más a lo andaluz, y otros que son una mezcla loca de todo, que aquí llaman ecléctico.
Strolling through Central Havana, you look up and see turned wooden balconies, wrought-iron grilles that look like lace, capitals that no longer support anything but still stand firm, like old soldiers. Some buildings look like they belong in Paris, others lean more towards Andalusian style, and some are a wild mix of everything, which locals call eclectic.
Y en medio de todo eso, la vida de la calle, el niño que juega con un perro, la señora que sacude un trapo en la ventana, el ronroneo de un motor de los años 50 que pasa con la música a todo volumenby las motorinas eléctricas qye están muy de moda. La arquitectura no es un museo aquí, es el decorado de la vida diaria.
And amidst all that, there's street life: the child playing with a dog, the woman shaking out a cloth from the window, the purr of a 1950s engine passing by with music blasting, and the electric mopeds that are very much in fashion. Architecture isn't a museum here; it's the backdrop for daily life.
Luego está la Habana Vieja, que es más arregladita, más de postal, con sus plazas y sus palacios restaurados. Es preciosa, sí, pero a veces te quedas más con la esquina de al lado, donde la columna está un poco torcida pero conserva la pintura original, donde el suelo es de losas antiguas y desgastadas por millones de pies.
Then there's Old Havana, which is a bit tidier, more like a postcard, with its restored squares and palaces. It's beautiful, yes, but sometimes you're more drawn to the corner right next door, where the column is slightly tilted but retains its original paint, where the ground is made of old flagstones worn smooth by millions of feet.
Y por supuesto, el Malecón. Ese es otro cantar. Ese muro enorme que abraza la ciudad, con sus edificios al otro lado de la calle, todos ellos de perfiles variados, mirando al mar. Sentarse allí al atardecer y ver cómo la luz acaricia esas fachadas es algo que no tiene precio. Ver las cúpulas, los toldos, las azoteas con sus tanques de agua, y entiendes por qué hay tantos poetas en esta isla.
And of course, the Malecón. That's a whole other story. That massive seawall that embraces the city, with its varied buildings across the street, all gazing out at the sea. Sitting there at sunset, watching the light caress those facades, is priceless. Seeing the domes, the awnings, the rooftops with their water tanks, and you understand why there are so many poets on this island.
La belleza de La Habana no es una belleza limpia, de esas que ves en una revista de decoración. Es una belleza que te habla, que te dice "mira, yo fui importante y glamorosa", que te muestra su grandeza pasada con dignidad, aunque ahora tenga goteras. Es ver una columna griega al lado de un tendedero de ropa, o un arco morisco con una antena de televisión.
La Habana tiene una mezcla de grandioso y cotidiano que la hace auténtica, real y profundamente hermosa. Cuando caminas por sus calles adoquinadas, con el sonido de la ciudad de fondo, te das cuenta de que lo más bonito es que aquí, entre tanta piedra y tanto color, late el corazón de un pueblo que para y no pierde la esperanza.
Havana's beauty isn't a pristine beauty, the kind you see in a decorating magazine. It's a beauty that speaks to you, that tells you, "Look, I was once important and glamorous," that shows you its past grandeur with dignity, even if it now has leaky roofs. It's seeing a Greek column next to a clothesline, or a Moorish arch with a television antenna.
Havana has a mix of the grandiose and the everyday that makes it authentic, real, and profoundly beautiful. When you walk its cobblestone streets, with the city's sounds in the background, you realize that the most beautiful thing is that here, amidst so much stone and so much color, beats the heart of a resilient people who never lose hope.
