Hoy quiero hablarle de mi modesta experiencia en un sitio maravilloso el cual visité recientemente. Luego de una extensa caminata por la ciudad, hice una pequeña escala allí para refrescar un momento con una deliciosa malta, como primera opción, o una Coca-Cola como última. El Hotel Iberostar Grand Packard se encuentra ubicado en el Paseo Martí (antiguo Paseo del Prado) entre Capdevila y Genios, en el municipio Habana Vieja, muy cerca del Malecón y del mar.

Today, I want to tell you about my modest experience at a wonderful place I visited recently. After an extended walk through the city, I made a brief stop there to refresh for a moment with a delicious malt drink, as my first choice, or a Coca-Cola as my last. The Iberostar Grand Packard Hotel is located on Paseo Martí (formerly Paseo del Prado) between Capdevila and Genios, in the municipality of Old Havana, very close to the Malecón and the sea.
Cuando entré por la inmensa puerta, choqué con un lujo y un glamour que me deslumbró. Fui recibida por un portero que me dió los buenos dias y luego llamó al oficial de seguridad. Dicho oficial me miró tres veces de arriba a abajo con cierta reserva, para luego preguntarme que deseaba y hacia donde me dirigía. Aquello me pareció bastante impropio, no creo que a ningún extranjero le hagan esa pregunta.
Lo miré fijamente y al notar algo de molestia en mi mirada me dijo que era para orientarme, como si yo fuera tonta. No sé si pensó que yo podía ser una terrorista que iba a poner una bomba, pero lo cierto es que eso me hizo recordar una página bien triste y bochornosa de la historia de la Revolución cubana.
When I entered through the immense door, I was met by a luxury and glamour that dazzled me. I was greeted by a doorman who wished me good morning and then called the security officer. This officer looked me up and down three times with a certain reserve, before asking me what I wanted and where I was headed. That seemed quite inappropriate to me; I don't believe any foreigner is asked that question.
I looked at him fixedly, and upon noticing a bit of annoyance in my gaze, he told me it was to guide me, as if I were stupid. I don't know if he thought I could be a terrorist coming to plant a bomb, but the truth is that it reminded me of a very sad and shameful page in the history of the Cuban Revolution.
Durante décadas (desde los 90 hasta 2008), los cubanos no pudimos entrar a los hoteles de lujo de nuestro país. Una de las tantas situaciones absurdas por las hemos tenido que pasar. Esta medida era profundamente impopular y vista como una humillación nacional. Por fortuna, fue abolida oficialmente por en marzo de 2008.
For decades (from the 90s until 2008), we Cubans could not enter the luxury hotels of our own country. One of the many absurd situations we have had to endure. This measure was deeply unpopular and seen as a national humiliation. Fortunately, it was officially abolished in March 2008.
Una vez adentro aproveché para ir a uno de los Baños del lobby que me dejó boquiarbierta. Luego me dirigía hacia el lobbybar pero allí solo se podía pagar en dólares y me indicaron de una cafetería donde sí podría pagar en moneda nacional y a través de tarjeta.
Once inside, I took the opportunity to go to one of the lobby bathrooms, which left me wide-eyed. Then I headed to the lobby bar, but there you could only pay in dollars, and they pointed me to a cafeteria where I could pay in the national currency and by card.
De manera que fui en busca de mi anhelada malta. Todos los trabajadores del hotel con los que me crucé durante mi travesía del lobbybar a la cafetería, me ofrecieron un trato amable y respetuoso, como debe ser.
So, I went in search of my longed-for malt drink. All the hotel workers I encountered during my journey from the lobby bar to the cafeteria offered me friendly and respectful treatment, as it should be.
Ya en la cafetería, que está rodeada de magníficos cristales como si fuera una pecera gigante, escogí un sitio en una esquina y me senté. El piso de mármol era como un espejo que contrastaba con el silencio y las sonrisas perfectas de los dependientes. Solo había otra mesa ocupada aparte de la mía. El aire acondicionado era una divinidad.
Finally in the cafeteria, which is surrounded by magnificent glass walls as if it were a giant fishbowl, I chose a spot in a corner and sat down. The marble floor was like a mirror, contrasting with the silence and the perfect smiles of the staff. There was only one other table occupied besides mine. The air conditioning was divine.
Enseguida una joven gastronómica se acercó con la clásica voz suave que se usa en este tipo de establecimientos, y me atendió ofreciéndome la carta, cosa que no era necesaria, solo fui por una simple malta, pero igual la vi por la inevitable curiosidad de ver los precios de unos dulces que se veían exquisitos debajo del mostrador.
Immediately, a young server approached with the classic soft voice used in this type of establishment and attended to me, offering me the menu, which wasn't necessary—I only came for a simple malt drink—but I looked at it anyway out of the inevitable curiosity to see the prices of some sweets that looked exquisite under the counter.
Miré la carta, llena de nombres raros y mezclas exóticas, y al final solté: Tráigame una malta bien fría.
-Lamentablemente, no disponemos de malta, señorita, dijo la joven con una cortesía que casi disimulaba lo extraño e increíble de la situación.
Yo me quedé anonadada. En un lugar donde tenían diez tipos de agua mineral y ocho tés diferentes, no había una simple malta. La vida a veces es así de irónica. En ese caso tráigame una Coca-Cola, le dije. Estuve allí unos veinte minutos disfrutando mi Coca-Cola servida en un vaso de cristal y con hielo, la bebí a pequeños sorbos mientras revisaba las redes sociales.
I looked at the menu, full of strange names and exotic mixes, and finally said: "Bring me a very cold malt drink."
"Unfortunately,we don't have malt, miss," said the young woman with a courtesy that almost disguised the strange and incredible nature of the situation.
I was stunned.In a place where they had ten types of mineral water and eight different teas, there was no simple malt drink. Life is sometimes that ironic. "In that case, bring me a Coca-Cola," I said. I stayed there for about twenty minutes enjoying my Coca-Cola served in a glass with ice. I drank it in small sips while checking social media.
Y allí, entre tanta elegancia ajena, encontré mi propio momento de lujo en la familiaridad de ese sabor dulzón y efervescente. No era lo que esperaba, pero fue perfecto. Para no estropearme yo misma el momento, pensé en que a veces, el confort no está en lo anhelado, sino en una "humilde" Coca-Cola que te salva cuando no hay malta. Fue mi pequeño placer en medio de tanta "perfección" impresionante.
And there, amidst so much foreign elegance, I found my own moment of luxury in the familiarity of that sweet, effervescent taste. It wasn't what I expected, but it was perfect. To not ruin the moment for myself, I thought that sometimes comfort isn't found in what is longed for, but in a "humble" Coca-Cola that saves you when there's no malt drink. It was my small pleasure amid so much impressive "perfection."
Este sofisticado hotel destaca por sus pisos y cristales relucientes e impecables, posee una inmensa piscina en el ultimo piso, la que por supuesto no pude ver porque solo permiten subir a los huéspedes, pero que si he visto en revistas, televisión y en las redes. Por lo que pude ver, tiene un impacto mínimo en el medioambiente gracias a sus prácticas sostenibles, cuenta con gran vegetación natural en sus espacios.
This sophisticated hotel stands out for its shiny, impeccable floors and glass. It has an immense pool on the top floor, which I of course couldn't see because only guests are allowed to go up, but which I have seen in magazines, on television, and on social media. From what I could see, it has a minimal environmental impact thanks to its sustainable practices and features abundant natural vegetation in its spaces.
Fue una corta pero grata experiencia, salvando el pequeño incidente del principio y la ausencia de la malta, aunque los únicos lujos que me pude dar, fueron admirar la belleza del lugar y tomarme una simple y refrescante Coca-Cola.
It was a short but pleasant experience, aside from the minor incident at the beginning and the absence of the malt drink. Although the only luxuries I could afford were admiring the beauty of the place and having a simple, refreshing Coca-Cola.
