Trebinje - City of Sun and Plane Trees

in Worldmappinlast month (edited)

Hello to all Hivers, travelers, explorers and those who like to find new locations in the posts of those who travel...

Today, more than any other day in the past months, I needed to go back in my thoughts a little, during my vacation (without business activities), to relieve myself a little and forget the challenges I face and struggle with every day.
And what's the easiest and best way to divert my thoughts, than by remembering trips...

I will go back to a place I visited for the first time in my life and show you pictures of its beauty, a little history and my experience...

Trebinje, one of the most beautiful cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is located in the south, at the foot of the Leotar mountain, and the Trebišnjica river flows through it.
The sea is 27 km away in the direction of Dubrovnik (which I wrote about here), or 38 km in the direction of Herceg Novi.

The city, which is called the City of Sun and Plane Trees, will surely delight everyone who visits it.
A pleasant, warm climate, nice people, quality food, along with everything you can see in Trebinje, will quickly "spend" a week, as much as we had available to visit that part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A large park right next to the walls of the old town, with a large sign of Trebinje, is a gathering place for young people and parents with children.

When you leave the park towards the old town, you come across a large square surrounded by plane trees, giant trees that create the kind of shade you can only wish for on hot summer days, of which there are a lot in Trebinje, it is only 19 km from the sea as the crow flies, summer is here very hot and dry
I don't know when it's nicer to sit in their shade, whether during the day, when we escaped the sun and listened to the sounds of crickets, or at night, when we enjoyed the pleasant music of the surrounding bars.

One of the most beautiful entrances to the old town is through the western gate.
A cobbled street, a narrow, dark passage leads to the large square of the old town.
Beautiful stone houses are at every turn.
One of the attractions is the gate from a popular domestic series, which has become a gathering place for fans.

Passing through the old town, you get to one of the bridges over the river. Crossing the bridge and going back over the other one leaves time to enjoy the beautiful shots of the water surface...

Crossing the bridge from the other side, you enter the courtyard of the Crkva Svetog Preobraženja (Church of the Holy Transfiguration).
Full of floral arrangements, this park also has a statue of the Serbian Patriarch Pavle.

Then again across the bridge to another part of the old town, where we come across a small mosque, lots of beautiful flower gardens, stone houses and a gate that leads to the river.
And again moments to enjoy the tranquility of the calm water surface.

Trebinje has many churches and monasteries.
Some of them we just photographed, and some we visited.

The most famous is the Tvrdoš monastery.
Originally, a Christian temple from the 4th century was located in this place, the endowment of Emperor Constantine, and in the centuries to the present day, with the change of rulers, it was restored, expanded, reconstructed...

In order for you as a visitor to be allowed to enter the monastery, you have to follow strict rules of behavior, which means that I could not enter the monastery before I covered my legs, which I put on bermuda shorts due to the high temperature.
It paid off for me to agree to use the scarf, the beauty of the interior of the church is indescribable.

In the church dedicated to the UspenjePresvete Bogorodice (Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), there is a part of the glass floor under which are the foundations of the old Christian church from the period of Emperor Constantine.
The darkness in that part of the church is so strong that it is impossible to take good pictures without better photo equipment, so I will stick to the photos of the beautifully lit part of the church, with icons, chandeliers and frescoes...

When you leave the church, through narrow stone passages, you come across another part of the monastery, the famous monastery winery.

The Vranac red wine produced in this monastery is widely known for its quality and taste.

Lest you think that the entire production is outdated, I share pictures from the production plant, as well as photos from the cellar, with huge barrels of wine.
There is so much wine that they put it in plastic buckets.
When I asked them what those buckets were for, they answered: "For personal use".
They agreed to sell me one. 5l for the price of one bottle in the store in front of the winery, and it seems to me that the taste is even better... Probably because it is for personal use🙂

From the Trvrdos monastery, we headed to another temple, to visit the grave of Jovan Dučić.
We found ourselves in front of the Serbian Orthodox Church of Hercegovina Gračanica, which was built according to the will of Jovanov, who was buried there, and modeled on the Gracanica monastery from Kosovo and Metohija.

From the hill above Trebinje, where this church is located, offers a fantastic view of the city.
From that elevation you can see the course of the river, and the Arslanagića bridge, a beautiful building from the second half of the 16th century.

The bridge was of great importance at that time because it was the connection between the Istanbul Road and Dubrovnik.

In order not to end the tour of the Herzegovina region with a tour of just one winery, we also visited the famous Vukoje wine cellar, which is oriented towards service and wine tasting in the restaurant.

In Trebinje, we spent our days on the man-made lake, an open area with the purpose of a swimming pool and beach, and our evenings walking around the old town, enjoying the plateau below the platsna and near the old walls.

Thank you for stopping by my post and I hope you enjoyed the photos and the story I shared with you

The balance between ancient architecture and nature is inspiring !

Balance is most important for everything in life.

I personally do not like this modern house that can be seen from the 4th century old bridge.
But what to do, the owner builds what he likes on his own, a contrast to ancient architecture and nature.
