Yes, forest fires have enormous destructive power. The forests affected by it will never be anywhere close to the same, in my lifetime.
That said, they also have a definitive "cleansing" effect, in eradicating various kinds of pestilence, and it opens up the forest floor to a whole new ecosystem of growth. Which ultimately culminates in the huge pine trees once again reigning supreme.
