Storing data locally than on Cloud

in STEMGeeks2 days ago

I have been thinking a lot about storing data locally on external hard drives, a NAS, or even in flash drives rather than keeping them all on Cloud storage. I see some valid reasons why we can store our data locally instead of storing them online. There are pros and cons and it also depends on what data we are trying to store. If the data is sensitive, I would strongly recommend having it on local storage than keeping it on the cloud. But when we say local storage there can be a problem for backups. Let's understand the advantages of having the data stored locally than on a cloud storage.

Cost efficient

Initially, it might look like the data on the cloud is more cost-efficient than keeping it on local storage. But in the long run, the storage on local hard drives or NAS is cost-effective compared to cloud storage. When we buy hardware for NAS, we might make a one-time investment but after that, we don't have to pay much every month or regularly and the hard drive usually lasts for a very long time. Scaling up on cloud storage also costs a lot of money based on the storage we need. In the local environment we can even have a backup option done for the same cost that we would be paying.

Data is safe and secure

If it is our local storage, we are 100 percent sure that the data is safe and secure as long as it is not connected to the internet. The only problem that can affect the local storage is hardware failure. Even for that if we have the backup done or have additional hardware as a backup, we should be sorted out. We don't have to fear about data going to unauthorized hands or people misusing our data. Security differs from one person to another based on everyone's needs. But in general local data is more secure than cloud data.

Full control of the data

I remember when Facebook decided to delete all the old photos. There used to be a time when we were uploading our photos in Facebook. But the photos were deleted after a point in time. Many people suffered because of this and there was no backup either. I remember having my photos deleted too. This is not just with Facebook but happened with many other data services. Recently I had the same problem with mega.nz. Thankfully I had a backup of all these data and it was also not a big deal if they deleted the data. We cannot be sure that we can have 100 percent control over the data. Some poor services might even sell our data or hack our data and get sensitive information out of it if they want to. Having local storage will avoid all these things and provide us with good protection over these things.

i don't like to store data on cloud, everyone can enter it, ok it's not public but it's potentially accessible to anyone

Storing files in the cloud has become very popular, as data is protected and can be downloaded whenever you want, safety first.

that's the reason i never ever backed up on google.

You are right, sir. In terms of cost, I also think local storage is better. If you store data on the cloud, one main concern is security, and another issue is that you can't do anything if the provider increases the charges.

Local storage definitely has its advantages! Cost efficiency, security, and full control over data make it a strong alternative to cloud storage, especially for sensitive information.

In the nearest future, I am so sure that we will have options on how to save our data online
