Praying Mantis - Fearless deadly predator

in STEMGeeks4 months ago (edited)

Even the snakes are afraid of Praying Mantis. I was watching some of the videos on YouTube on Praying Mantis and how they hunt their prey. I was so surprised to see how deadly they are in attacking their predators like Camelion. For the Cameleon, the Praying Mantis is a prey but one small miss or mistake, Cameleon can become a prey for the praying mantis. Even the deadliest Predators are afraid of praying mantis because they don't seem to fear anything. There are videos where Praying Mantis fight with cats and snakes too.

Praying Mantis creates a healthy ecosystem

Today I was wondering when was the last time I saw a praying mantis. I guess it could be about 10 years back when we had a lot of garden space and a lot of plants in our house. I have spent hours with Praying Mantis observing what they are doing. I never knew they were this deadly back then. They seemed to be very calm and I was even thinking that they were just herbivores and insects that feed on the plants for their living. Only recently I came to know how deadly they were.

The reason why they create a healthy ecosystem is because they hunt a lot of species around them. Starting from grasshoppers to cockroaches, they even hunt rats and kill them or eat them alive. They don't fear anything. The ecosystem becomes clean if cockroaches and rats are hunted out. Cats also play a very important role in hunting rats but even these cats fear Praying Mantis because they make a Kung Fu stand in front of them and fear them off.

Praying Mantis vs Bigger species

They don't seem to look like an insect at all. They seem to hunt down whatever they see. They don't even care about the size of their prey and they start eating them alive little by little. They have claws that have a saw in them and their mouth are also capable of biting anything hard. So they just catch hold of the prey and continuously start eating them alive.

Even though the Praying mantis is a carnivorous insect they also eat their kind during mating. A female Praying mantis will eat the head of the male while they are mating. It will then consume the body. If we look at the size of the Praying Mantis, they don't seem to look like they have a huge appetite but looks like they have a huge craving for killing probably. Some videos show how Praying Mantis even hunt birds and fishes.

Predator becomes a prey

There have been a few instances where when a Cameleon tries to hunt a Praying Mantis, it misses, and the Praying Mantis takes revenge by attacking the Cameleon. They are designed in such a way that they know where to hit the prey so that they can make an easy kill. They usually stay away from bigger snakes but if they find a smaller snake, they go and catch hold of the head and starts eating. Even if the snake tries to evade them by squeezing with the body, they will already start chewing the head of a snake and the snake would be dead by then.

Wow
This is the first time I’m hearing of Praying Mantis and I’m even shocked that it can fight a snake but it looks small
Small but mighty

It’s so unbelievable that this little thing can fight a snake. I’m shocked
I’d make more research about it
