Los niños del equipo azul, planeaban construir el castillo de arena más grande de todo el campamento. Aquel grupo de niños estaba conformado por los hijos de varios ingenieros; y tenían fama de ser los más inteligentes del grupo. Mientras que el equipo rojo, no tenía aún una estrategia definida. Para ellos, aquel tiempo en la playa era una magnífica oportunidad de disfrutar sus vacaciones. La conformación de aquellos dos grupos había estado a cargo de los propios estudiantes.
La competencia iniciaría en la mañana, y se escogería un grupo ganador, que disfrutaría de ser servido por el grupo perdedor. Es decir, un grupo se dedicaría al autoservicio; para ello, estarían divididos en subgrupos. Un primer subgrupo, se dedicaría a la limpieza de las residencias, un segundo subgrupo, se dedicaría a la limpieza de las áreas públicas, y un tercer subgrupo estaría a carga de las tareas de apoyo de la cocina y el comedor.
Así que más que determinar un grupo vencedor, la competencia buscaba definir un grupo perdedor. El objetivo de aquel juego, era educativo, con él se buscaba que los niños aprendieran a cooperar entre el grupo, que no pensaran en obtener ventajas sobre el otro grupo y sobre todo, que se divirtieran al jugar. Sin embargo, aquellos niños no se percataban de que aquella competencia era parte del entrenamiento educativo de aquel campamento estudiantil.
Todos los niños se acostaron deseando que llegara la hora de la competencia, para saber quiénes serían los afortunados ganadores. Al amanecer discutían entre los grupos, diciendo cada uno, que serían los ganadores. Por fin, el director del campamento, explicó en que consistiría la competencia, qué tiempo tendrían para completar la tarea, el lugar donde se asentaría cada grupo; y algo muy fundamental, el grupo que primero terminara podría ayudar al otro grupo, lo cual los haría copropietarios del ese otro castillo y en caso necesario, podrían hacer uso de la palabra mágica "mi otro castillo". Con la cual no habría ganador ni perdedor, y las tares de servicio serían compartidas entre ambos grupos.
Aunque la playa era extensa, el área de la competencia era rectangular, donde la parte estrecha colindaba con la playa. Al parecer era algo ventajoso quedar en la parte más próxima al mar. Mientras que el grupo que estarían más alejados del mar tendía todas las de perder. Así que debían de seleccionar un representante por cada grupo, los cuales correrían hasta la playa; el representante que primero tocara el agua, le otorgaría el puesto cerca del mar a su grupo.
En la carrera ganó, el grupo azul, así que de entrada ya tenían todas las de ganar. Sin contar, que ellos tenían bien definida su estrategia, para construir el castillo más grande. Aunque al principio, el equipo rojo se entristeció, al comenzar la tarea de construcción, decidieron que lo principal era divertirse. Así, en el tiempo en que el grupo rojo cargaba un cubo de arena húmeda desde la orilla de la playa, el grupo azul, cargaba dos. Por eso, lograron construir su castillo en menos tiempo que el grupo rojo, y en lugar de ayudar a sus amigos, se sentaron a mirar cuánto le faltaba.
En tanto que se divertían con su merecida victoria, el grupo azul no se percató de que la marea iba subiendo y pronto derribaría su castillo. Y así sucedió, pronto comenzó a desmoronarse frente a sus ojos, mientras el grupo rojo terminaba su castillo.
