"Merchant of Lost Things" the middle sign boasted and Javier spotted as he rounded the corner at 12th and Nettleton. The sleek, black Camero with reflective chrome rims left a long shadow on the pavement as it glided toward the storefront and skidded to a complete halt. Neon signs and several shops stood nearby with open arms, hoping he'd grace them with his usual presence.

From across the street, Malcolm peered, then glanced at his watch. Half past six. In another hour, the complete cover of night will favor his plan.

He shifted from one foot to the other, snuffed out the cigarette, then covered his mouth to suppress a heavy cough. He reached into his coat pocket and felt the reason that gave him the authority to be present at that location. For that reason, his pulse rate regulated. It wasn't his first surveillance assignment.

What he couldn't see was a young man almost half his age digging deep into the passenger seat's side pocket. With a vicious grin, he removed the heirloom. It didn't matter that the pearls would be his to bestow upon his future bride. Immediately, a shiver overtook him. He stared into the distance.

Malcolm desired nothing more than to rush across the crosswalk, yank the young man named Javier from the vehicle, and demand the return of his ancestor's possession before he entered the building.

The name above the sign was misleading at best. Numerous "lost things" meandered their way into the owner's shop. Once inside, shady dealings conducted behind closed doors assured those items remained lost and left many a family bereft of their heirlooms and other precious antiques.

Why didn't Javier exit?

Malcolm already knew. Once his promotion became effective, his duties didn't include surveillance. However, several months later, a case brought to his attention stopped him midway through the details. Immediately, he telephoned one of his officers and assigned it to her.

But a nagging feeling crawled through his thoughts. The signs pointed to someone in his inner personal circle. That Malcolm had just visited the home where he'd dined with his Aunt Aurelia failed to weight heavily on his heart. His shoulders heaved. No sympathy existed in the decision he'd be forced to consider. His career depended on it.

After a long moment, thoughts turned to his own devoted parents. Blind they were when any conversation turned to their youngest nephew. Witty, charming, and deflective when pressed for concrete solutions to his financial endeavors was Javier. Malcolm sifted through the rhetoric but relented years ago in his attempt to remove the veil of genuine affection both sets of parents held for his cousin.

Feelings long absent played their part in the drama about to unfold.

Malcolm dismissed a less-than-healthy childhood that steered heaps of pity in Javier's direction. He often wondered which ones held true medical conditions underneath.

Not tonight. Malcolm's resolve hardened. He watched as Javier finally emerged from the vehicle. He'd need to be careful. Another individual remained seated. In his line of business, armed with weapons was expected.

Malcolm snuffed out the cigarette, then rushed across the street. Instantly, he placed Javier's hand in a behind the back lock. Buckling his knees, Javier fell to the sidewalk. Malcolm kept his eye on the vehicle in case the passenger decided to defend Javier.

Instead, the vehicle's engine immediately roared, then sped away down the street from the pawn shop, leaving Javier to fend for himself.

"How could do this to your family, Javier? They'd done nothing but treat you with love and respect, although you didn't deserve one ounce of it. You'd sell your inheritance to the cheapest pawn shop who'd risk accepting it. And for what? A week's wages. Why not get a job instead!"

Javier couldn't respond.

Exposure. Capture. Conviction. And sentencing was Malcolm's plan for the family's favorite cousin. Javier didn't deserve a future on the right side of the law. His criminal activities these past several years had come to an end.

And saving the family's inheritance would be a benevolent satisfaction.

*"¿Cómo has podido hacerle esto a tu familia, Javier?

Javier no pudo responder.

Exposición. Captura. Condena.
