Often, when a group of individuals believe they are being given a gift, further investigation may be required to determine whether that item is in their best interest. Rarely do people question the premise of items offered either for free for a small amount. Usually the gift is of such immense value that people don't think twice about trying to posses it.
However, once analyzed, it can be found that the resources people rush to part with can be utilized elsewhere for a more practical benefit. But that's a long-term strategy, and people would rather invest funds they may not even have at their disposal to obtain that which is viewed as a "get rich quick scheme". The temptation can be overwhelming with the promises of riches the individuals hadn't previously experienced during their lifetime.
This microfiction story for the prompt "your ticket out of here" reminds me of individuals who purchase lottery tickets for a chance to win millions or billions of dollars. Personally, I believe the system that operates the lottery give-a-way is rigged. It has been long believed that the lottery is a "poor person's" tax as a way to apply a tax to people who wouldn't otherwise normally pay taxes in society for several reasons.
I share with you a story that's in the form of a ZAPFIC50 that's told in exactly 50 words. Below is my story.
"Good luck. Your ticket out of here," the clerk offered cheerfully.
Leaving, patrons smiled receiving a good omen.
Kenneth reached the counter, paid for his ticket, then turned to leave.
No words exchanged.
Confused, the clerk stated, "Lottery is poor people's tax. You look like you've paid your fair share."
