At fifty-five and still a Level 1 labor grade in his profession, Lenny documented each venture he undertook in his notebook. Entries in the success column didn't keep pace with the failures. Daily, he lamented during the day on everything desirable but unattainable in his life while nightly drowning himself in spirits.

Co-workers whispered, then quickly moved away as Lenny approached the bulletin board that posted promotions each month. He fumed while studying the list. Humiliated, he turned to see the imagined gossip before slamming his fist against the wall. His thoughts; a whirlwind of indignation.

"Twenty years I've given this place," he uttered, solidifying the justification for his next move he'd kept to himself. I need time off to rethink my purpose in life.

So Lenny requested and quickly approved for a six-week leave of absence. His supervisor agreed he needed a re-tuning. If you need more, just ask before your time is up management suggested. All suspected Lenny's personal life wasn't going smoothly, although he never spoke of any discord.

While on leave, family and friends desperately attempted to encourage him to seek professional help. After numerous people offered to accompany him to sobriety meetings, he relented. But his actions were merely to divert their attention from his true machinations.

Thinking his disruptive behavior on the job went unnoticed, once he returned to work, he escalated verbal assaults.

Management issued a warning in which a probation ensued. Three months to "clean up your act of fostering a hostile work environment".

Devastated, Lenny viewed the reprimand as a an assault on his character and unappreciative of his twenty-year service. That night, Lenny reached out to his friend, Cooper.

"If you're unhappy in your career, know you're doing your job well, and don't feel you're being adequately rewarded, then reconsider your commitment to the company. But change won't matter if your attitude and liquor consumption aren't brought under control. At some point, you have to cease blaming others and look inward," Cooper urged, although he could see by the rolling of Lenny's eyes and unsteadiness in his gait that his message was lost.

Through slurred speech, Lenny did promise to tone down his angst. Half-listening, he refused to accept that the fault lay with him.

Meanwhile, retribution festered.

It was a Friday afternoon. The date of the annual office party. Although hesitant, Lenny was ultimately invited. To omit him would not be wise, his supervisor reasoned. After all, Lenny was trying, he felt.

All employees who attended the party enjoyed the festivities; except Lenny. Faces attached to the names on the bulletin board who'd recently received promotions stared at him as though mocking his deliberate omission.

His head pounded. His pulse raced. He clenched and uncleaned his fists. while remaining huddling in the far corner close to the open bar. I've no friends here, he declared silently. I shouldn't have come. Everyone is laughing, accusing me. The room swirled as he shook his head in an attempt to toss out the thought gremlins roaming unchecked, distributing alcohol fumes in their path.

Lenny woke on Saturday morning and discovered his monstrous hangover came with a termination letter.

Shocked, his shoulders rose and fell with each labored breath. He couldn't remember details of the night before after his arrival, especially him being ejected from the party and sent home in a taxi.

Cooper arrived with assistance. He was grateful for the call from Lenny's supervisor requesting that he check on him. No family meant he could step in and help his friend by having him taken away not only for his safety, but for others.

Stunned at the scribbling in Lenny's notebook and visibly shaking, his hesitancy in having Lenny committed for evaluation dissipated. His timely and necessary intervention saved not only his friend but also countless others.

No debería haber venido.

I admire how you convey Lenny's deep emotions to the reader. It felt like Lenny clenched his fists in front of me.

Well, there is a bit of an open plot, I think Lenny also has the right to defend himself, not just because of frustration of work appreciation, maybe there is a deeper reason behind it, and every character deserves a chance to explain 😊

Hello @anggreklestari. You are right that Lenny has a right to defend himself. He suffers from paranoia and other illnesses. He doesn't know how to deal with them other than drown himself in liquor. I sense that he's a loner at work and in his personal life. He doesn't explain his feelings to anyone, but writes down his feelings in a notebook, then drinks to ease his pain. A deadly combination when you don't have anyone to talk to. His friend tries to help.

Hopefully Lenny can explain his true feelings at the facility where he was taken. They will help with his conflict resolution in not turning to alcohol to solve his problems.

Thanks so much for your visit and thoughtful insight into my story. Take care.

@topcomment

As a man, it is also difficult to express his feelings and it makes sense that it makes him more dependent on alcohol, and he feels more and more lonely.

That is true, which makes it even sadder because he doesn't have an immediate family, spouse or children in his life. I speculate that many people go through this loneliness and cycle.

Take care.

Thank God for the Coopers of the world, and prayers for them and all the Lennys they help before tragedies strike -- numbers we will never know on this side of glory!

Another mass tragedy diverted hopefully. If only the Coopers of the world and family members would intervene upfront, there would be less tears on the other side.

Thanks for your visit and thoughtful comment. I appreciate it.

All we can do is not miss our day to be Cooper and the family ... I think about this A LOT... sometimes people still choose to spin out ... but sometimes, we can make a difference.

DONE. Thanks for the invite.

Lenny’s story sheds light on a reality many people face, where frustration and addiction mix and deeply affect both personal and professional life.

You are so right @elias22 I've seen it happen numerous times over my career. You know something is wrong, but can't quite pinpoint it. Most times, people shy away from this uncertainty not wanting to get involved.

I appreciate your visit and insight into my story. Thanks so much for stopping by. Take care.
