MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "I don't want criticism".
...Often people shy away from the spotlight when they've been exposed for wrongdoing. In other scenarios, individuals may not want to be out front of an issue for fear of criticism. In any event, how they handle the situation is key to its resolution.
For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of 2 June 2025, @mariannewest's Freewrite Writing Prompt Day 2755: I don’t want criticism.
Below is my story:
"Allow the authorities to handle the legwork", several of Gretchen's friends advised. "You don't need to search for evidence." Basking in her naivete, she reluctantly relented, reasoning that all would be uncovered, and her minor part in the company's alleged accounting scheme would grant her immunity.
The charges naming her as a major contributor and mastermind, her family pointed out, suggested otherwise.
Two of her children, who possessed a keen eye for duplicity, sprung into action. Taking charge, they advised against their mother's do-nothing approach.
"You're relinquishing control of your destiny into the hands of the group attorney," they argued. "Your welfare isn't their concern. They only want to ensure You don't contradict them."
"I don't want criticism," Gretchen begged, "I've fared well in this company these past ten years," still under the misguided notion her interests were being covered, her two children reasoned.
The next week, her worst fears, reminding her of the domino effect, materialized. Learning that two co-workers and one supervisor named their mother as mastermind of the scheme, the children bolted into action, immediately hiring her own attorney.
This strategy set into motion the conviction of Gretchen's involvement. Forged documents uncovered bearing her signatures. Unauthorized transactions originating from her surfaced. Meetings she attended were misconstrued. And recorded conversations that never took place baffled her.
The conspiracy web reached far and deep.
And Gretchen's blind loyalty secured her downfall. Left standing with the last domino, the conviction ensured she'd spend the latter portion of her life incarcerated.
