The milk had a little coffee in it. Due to an extreme sensitivity to caffeine, Professor Gordon could only stomach the most miniscule quantities of caffeine at a time. This was upsetting to her because she loved the taste and would gladly have downed cup after cup of espresso if her digestive tract would only agree.
On the bright side, this breakfast featured her very own homemade strawberry jam and that was absolutely perfect. She would even refer to it as her greatest achievement. Despite being one of the brilliant researchers responsible for the technology that had started the Venusian terraforming project. But then again, nobody had ever run afoul of an entire alien civilization with a delicious jam.
Apparently all of Earth's neighboring planets had life that existed in peace with knowledge of each other, occasionally communicating and even engaging in trade. All but Earth. The exception that none of the others trusted enough to contact. So the mission she and her team believed would take a barren world and make it into a second home was considered an act of war by that planet's thriving (and more advanced civilization).
This might be her last breakfast on Earth before she stood trial in front of a jury with no Earthlings on it for a crime she had not even known she was committing. She chewed slowly and tried not to let misery steal her appetite. She would need her strength to face whatever the future held.
