The trees were oddly bent, like gnarled, grasping hands. The paint on the houses peeled and quite a few windows were cracked. Every floorboard creaked, every hinge squeaked. Rumor had it that the narrow streets were terrorized by a band of feral canines (an ecclectic mix of coyotes, wolves and runaway pets).
One look and you could tell why it was the cheapest retirement village in the country. But the residents didn't seem to mind. They all appreciated their spooky surroundings and each other. They even created an interesting tradition: any time one of the residents had an unwanted visitor, one of them would volunteer to be “the ghost”. For the duration of that unwanted visit, the ghost would be plainly visible in various places but the other residents would pretend they weren't there.
The best part would be revealing the fake obituary with the ghost's picture on it. Depending on how unwanted the visitor was they might even do some minor property damage for added realism. It worked like a charm and no one ever overstayed.
