I think he doesn’t just forget what people said to him, and if it is just as he said, he shouldn’t have remembered to complaints to the doctor.

        Although I took it as a joke, memory problems in older people can be quite worrying. By the way, I think you're right about the fact that it's not like he forgets everything, because if that were the case, he wouldn't realize he was forgetting things and wouldn't have gone to the doctor.
