Today I'm excited to join the #wednesdaywalk initiative, promoted by our beloved @tattoodjay, to share a recent walk through a very special and significant garden. It's located on Obrapía Street, one of those streets in Old Havana that always has stories to tell. This garden is located at the back of the Casa África museum and is, without a doubt, one of its most memorable spots.
It's accessed through a walkway covered by glass skylights that protect from the rain without blocking the light. The ceramic floor contrasts with the yellow walls and the lush vegetation surrounding it. At the end of the walkway, an iron gate leads us to this urban oasis, where works of art are exhibited, each described in a graphic caption at the entrance.

Hoy me emociona unirme a la iniciativa #wednesdaywalk, impulsada por nuestro querido @tattoodjay, para compartir un paseo reciente por un jardín muy especial y significativo. Se encuentra en la calle Obrapía, una de esas calles de La Habana Vieja que siempre tiene historias que contar. Este jardín se encuentra en la parte trasera del museo Casa África y es, sin duda, uno de sus rincones más memorables.
Se accede a través de una pasarela cubierta por claraboyas de cristal que protegen de la lluvia sin bloquear la luz. El suelo de cerámica contrasta con las paredes amarillas y la exuberante vegetación que lo rodea. Al final de la pasarela, una verja de hierro nos conduce a este oasis urbano, donde se exhiben obras de arte, cada una descrita en un texto gráfico en la entrada.
The first thing that catches your eye is a wall decorated with masks representing countries like Cameroon, Angola, and Mali. Carved from wood and inlaid with shells and plant fibers, these pieces are not mere ornaments: they evoke rituals, beliefs, and ancestral memories that still resonate in the present.
Lo primero que llama la atención es una pared decorada con máscaras representativas de países como Camerún, Angola y Mali. Talladas en madera e incrustadas con caracoles y fibras vegetales, estas piezas no son simples adornos: evocan rituales, creencias y memorias ancestrales que aún vibran en el presente.
At the center of the garden is a bronze sculpture by Cuban artist Alberto Lescay, titled The Return of Aponte. The work depicts a man holding his own head in his hands, a powerful symbol of rebellion and justice. Aponte, the leader of an anti-slavery conspiracy, was unjustly executed, and this piece honors his legacy with strength and dignity.
En el centro del jardín se encuentra una escultura de bronce del artista cubano Alberto Lescay, titulada El Regreso de Aponte. La obra muestra a un hombre que alza su propia cabeza entre las manos, símbolo poderoso de rebeldía y justicia. Aponte, líder de una conspiración antiesclavista, fue ejecutado injustamente, y esta pieza honra su legado con fuerza y dignidad.
Among the plants growing there are Indian bananas, sugarcane, palm trees, and coffee: a mix of African and native species that symbolize the fusion of two worlds. Also on display is a sugar mill, an instrument I had only seen in books and photographs. Touching it was thrilling, as if history became tangible in my hands.
Entre las plantas que crecen allí se encuentran plátanos de la India, caña de azúcar, palmas y café: una mezcla de especies africanas y autóctonas que simbolizan la fusión de dos mundos. También se exhibe un trapiche, instrumento que hasta entonces solo había visto en libros y fotografías. Tocarlo fue emocionante, como si la historia se hiciera tangible en mis manos.

The garden also features three photographic panels that, like windows onto the African continent, invite us to contemplate its landscapes, monuments, and cultural symbols. One shows the characteristic baabad trees of the African landscape; another, the Obelisk of Axum in Ethiopia; and the third, the monument to the Afrikaans language in South Africa.
En el jardín existen también hay tres paneles fotográficos que, como ventanas abiertas al continente africano, nos invitan a contemplar sus paisajes, monumentos y símbolos culturales, uno muestra los árboles boabads característicos del paisaje africano; otro, el Obelisco de Axum en Etiopía; y el tercero, el monumento a la Lengua Afrikaans en Sudáfrica.
Amidst the foliage, the yellow walls, and every object in this space, a profound harmony permeates the air. Everything seems to connect with history, memory, and beauty. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and allow yourself to be enveloped by its magic.
