I was reflecting here on our technological evolution and how much of our modern comfort derives from some war technology: would you be reading this post of mine if it weren't for the old ARPANET, a military network resilient to nuclear attacks that originated the Internet; speaking of nuclear weapons, they were the promoters of nuclear science, widely used today in medicine. GPS also has its military origin, not only in the interest of defending one's own territory but also in attacking territories, buildings, and people. All commercial aviation derives from technology developed militarily, for war.
When technology is no longer developed within the military sphere, the latter quickly incorporates it and uses its trillion-dollar global budgets for investment in technologies of death, of destruction that, perhaps later, may be used for the good of Humanity. Furthermore, globally more is invested in "defense" than in Research and Development.
Meanwhile, millions of people go hungry worldwide, communities are threatened by climate change, promoted by CO2 emissions, much of which comes from military and warfare technology in use on the planet.
The so-called "green revolution", also originating from warfare technology combined with genetic manipulation, did not ensure the eradication of hunger, just as other technologies could or should be used to mitigate the effects of climate change and in confronting it, and not in over 20 wars around the world.
We have many controversial technologies: genetic manipulation, the very emergence of current artificial intelligence, and all this warfare technology.
But I think we have a fundamental problem: priority investments are not made for peace and the development of humanity. They are used for military control, the veiled threat between major economic powers, in a tug-of-war of "who is stronger," and there is no United Nations Organization or any other international body that can change this scenario.
Searching for data on military investment, I discovered that today, we are arming ourselves globally much more than during the Cold War. The world military budget grew by almost 10% between 2023 and 2024, reaching 2.718 trillion dollars. This is about 2.5% of global GDP!
(The budget for global Research and Development was 1.7 trillion, and a good part of that - at least 10% - was, indeed, "defense" technology).
And the damage that these 2.5% cause? How much will be spent on the reconstruction of Ukraine, which already allocates a third of its budget to resist Russian attacks? And in Gaza, when will we have humanitarian aid investments in the same amount as what is being used for the destruction of the territory and the death of people?
UN data indicates an investment of only 0.05% of global GDP in aid to populations in need, including those in war zones, but not only. And there was even a decrease of 7.1% in these investments in the last year!
So, more than this or that dangerous technology, what worries me is the financing system of our entire technological base, under which we have, yes, achieved several social benefits but which, in the end, literally, compromises us as a society.
We would need a global shift in this direction, but the major powers do not seem willing, quite the opposite: the trend is to invest more and more in armaments, and less and less in humanitarian aid and confronting climate change.

Estava eu aqui refletindo sobre nossa evolução tecnológica e o quanto do nosso conforto moderno deriva e alguma tecnologia de guerra: será que você estaria lendo essa minha postagem se não fosse a antiga ARPANET, rede militar resistente a ataques nucleares que originou a Internet; falando em armas nucleares, foram elas as promotoras da ciência nuclear hoje muito utilizada na medicina. O GPS também tem a sua origem militar, no interesse não só da defesa do próprio território mas, também, no ataque a territórios, edificações e pessoas. Toda a aviação comercial deriva da tecnologia desenvolvida militarmente, para a guerra.
Quando a tecnologia já não é desenvolvida dentro do meio militar, este rapidamente a incorpora e utiliza dos seus trilionários orçamentos globais para investimento em tecnologias de morte, de destruição que, depois, talvez, venham a ser empregados a bem da Humanidade. Inclusive, se investe mundialmente mais em "defesa" do que em Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento.
Enquanto isso, milhões de pessoas passam fome no mundo, comunidades estão ameaçadas pelas mudanças climáticas, promovidas pela emissão de CO2, muito dele oriundo da tecnologia bélica e militar em uso no planeta.
A dita "revolução verde", também originária de tecnologia bélica aliada a manipulação genética, não assegurou a erradicação da fome, assim como outras tecnologias poderiam ou deveriam estar sendo empregadas para amenizar os efeitos das mudanças climáticas e no seu enfrentamento, e não em mais de 20 guerras pelo mundo.
Temos muitas tecnologias controversas: manipulação genética, a própria emergência da inteligência artificial atual, e toda esta tecnologia bélica.
Mas acho, temos um problema de fundo: os investimentos prioritários não são feitos para a paz e o desenvolvimento da humanidade. São empregados para o controle militar, a ameaça velada entre grandes potências econômicas, numa queda de braço de "quem pode mais", e não há Organização das Nações Unidas ou qualquer outro colegiado internacional que consiga mudar este cenário.
Procurando dados sobre investimento militar, descobri que estamos, hoje, nos armando mundialmente muito mais do que no tempo da guerra fria. O orçamento militar mundial cresceu quase 10% entre 2023 e 2024 chegando a 2,718 trilhões de dólares. Isso é cerca de 2,5% do PIB mundial!

Dados da ONU apontam um investimento de apenas 0,05% do PIB mundial em auxílio à populações necessitadas, inclusive as em área de guerra, mas não apenas. E ainda houve uma queda de 7,1% nestes investimentos no último ano!
Então, mais do que essa ou aquela tecnologia perigosa, me preocupa o sistema de financiamento de toda nossa base tecnológica, sob a qual conquistamos, sim, vários benefícios sociais mas que, no final das contas, literalmente, nos compromete enquanto sociedade.
Precisaríamos de uma guinada mundial neste sentido, mas as grandes potências não parecem dispostas, antes pelo contrário: a tendência é investirmos cada vez mais em armamentos, e cada vez menos na ajuda humanitária e enfrentamento às mudanças climáticas.
