Cancellation culture is a phenomenon of the digital age in which we live. It is a process in which a person becomes the target of boycotts and criticism, usually on social media, due to attitudes that are considered inappropriate or offensive. This type of “termination” can result in the loss of reputation, employment and even more serious impacts on the life of the person involved. It's a pretty radical way of turning an individual's life into a living hell. But is this really beneficial for society? Is it the best way to solve social problems?
Let's look at it from a different point of view. A few decades ago, before the explosion of the internet, famous people often did whatever they wanted. They could be arrogant, have old-fashioned attitudes and even treat their fans badly, and not much would happen. Today, any famous person would be afraid to do anything wrong, because the whole internet could turn against them. Even if they were a celebrity, their entire reputation and earnings would be at risk if the internet turned against them. In that sense, and only in that sense, things are more controllable, nobody says or does what they want knowing that it could be canceled.
However, even with this perspective, am I in favor of the cancellation culture? No, not at all. I know that people need to express their opinions on certain issues and shouldn't just passively watch events unfold. Cancellation is a way for people to actively participate with their actions. But that's not a smart way to handle things. There are more appropriate ways to punish someone who has committed a crime or said something inappropriate.
I believe that many problems arise with the culture of cancellation, and the first of these is injustice or exaggerated punishment for some act. Regardless of who is being canceled, I don't believe it's fair for a person to be punished by individuals who have no in-depth knowledge of what is going on. It's not fair for someone to pay for something based on superficial evidence or because a group of people, in their moments of hatred, want to destroy that person's life. If someone makes a mistake, they should be punished, yes, but by competent bodies, with the right to a defense. It's not human to attack someone without giving them the opportunity to defend themselves.
In addition to injustice, the act of canceling a person can be motivated by the personal interests of others. It's not difficult to hire people to start attacking someone with the aim of tarnishing their reputation and benefiting from possible competition. This facilitates unfair competition. Another point is unfair termination, based on fake news. Imagine the damage this can do to an innocent person's life. I've heard of people having their lives ruined because of events like this.
Of course, the cancellation culture has imposed some limits on people. Today, it would be difficult for someone to do as they please without fearing consequences. It's a way for people to actively participate in something they disapprove of. But the big problem is that people have overdone it, and many are suffering disproportionate punishments. I don't know what the future holds for this culture we live in, but I do know that this is not the best way to fight injustice when you are also being unjust.

Podiam ser arrogantes, ter atitudes antiquadas e até mesmo tratar mal seus fãs, e pouca coisa acontecia. Hoje, qualquer pessoa famosa teria medo de fazer algo errado, pois a internet inteira poderia se voltar contra ela. Mesmo sendo uma celebridade, toda a sua reputação e ganhos estariam em risco caso a internet se virasse contra ela. Nesse sentido, e apenas nisso, as coisas estão mais controláveis, ninguém fala ou faz o que bem entende sabendo que poderá ser cancelado.
No entanto, mesmo com essa perspectiva, sou a favor da cultura do cancelamento? Não, de forma alguma. Sei que as pessoas precisam expressar suas opiniões sobre determinados assuntos e não devem apenas assistir passivamente aos acontecimentos. O cancelamento é uma maneira de as pessoas participarem ativamente com seus atos. Mas essa não é uma maneira inteligente de lidar com as coisas. Existem formas mais adequadas de punir alguém que cometeu um crime ou disse algo impróprio.
Acredito que muitos problemas surgem com a cultura do cancelamento, e o primeiro deles é a injustiça ou a punição exagerada por algum ato. Independente de quem esteja sendo cancelado, não acredito que seja justo que uma pessoa seja punida por indivíduos que não têm conhecimento profundo do que está acontecendo. Não é justo que alguém pague por algo baseado em provas superficiais ou porque um grupo de pessoas, em seus momentos de ódio, quer destruir a vida dessa pessoa. Se alguém erra, deve ser punido, sim, mas por órgãos competentes, com direito a defesa. Não é humano atacar alguém sem dar a oportunidade de se defender.
Além da injustiça, o ato de cancelar uma pessoa pode ser motivado por interesses pessoais de outras. Não é difícil contratar pessoas para começar a atacar alguém com o objetivo de manchar sua reputação e se beneficiar em uma possível concorrência. Isso facilita uma concorrência desleal. Outro ponto é o cancelamento injusto, baseado em fake news. Imagine o estrago que isso pode causar na vida de uma pessoa inocente. Já ouvi casos de pessoas que tiveram suas vidas arruinadas por conta de eventos como esse.
É claro que a cultura do cancelamento impôs alguns limites nas pessoas. Hoje, seria difícil alguém fazer o que bem entende sem temer consequências. É uma maneira que as pessoas encontraram de participar ativamente em algo que desaprovam. Mas o grande problema é que as pessoas exageraram nessa atitude, e muitas estão sofrendo punições desproporcionais. Não sei o que o futuro reserva para essa cultura em que vivemos, mas sei que essa não é a melhor forma de combater injustiças quando também estão sendo injustos.
