Young Minds, Big Ideas: The Surprising Brilliance Of My Young Friend

Witnessing people exhibit their intellect is really fascinating. Intelligence goes beyond the confines of age and experience. It is really amazing how even kids, who are often underestimated, can surprise us with brilliant ideas. Intelligence knows no age limit. One thing I love about my mum is that she’s always open to ideas no matter how old you are. Growing up, she would always ask for our thoughts on different subjects. When it comes to turning people down, my mom sometimes struggles with it, so she’d come to us for advice. Even though she is way wiser and has more experience than us, the fact that she’d often seek our advice showed that she valued our opinions.

It soothes my heart when I see kids display intelligence that surpassses their age. I mean, imagine being completely taken back when a kid who you might assume knows just the basics, like how to recite the alphabet or how to spell three-letter words, starts talking about the theory of psychoanalysis or the history of literature in English. That’d be really impressive, right? The world is loaded with these kids. Brilliant kids who display sheer intelligence are rare to come by. Over the years, the term intelligence has eluded a single definition, this is because everyone has their own definition of what it truly means. In my opinion, intelligence goes beyond grades or the ability to speak fancy grammar. It is about the power of the brain and how we think and solve problems. It's so much more than just language skills.

I have once been impressed by a kid who wowed me with her intelligence. Gbemisola, my little friend, lives just three houses away from mine. She likes taking pictures so much, and I think I have once shared her images on my blog. One interesting thing about Gbemisola is that she enjoys socializing and staying around people who are older than her. This is because she often faced bullying from kids around her. Gbemisola grew up in a rural area where English is not her first language, and those around her didn’t speak it fluently either. Whenever she came to spend time with my family, we would help improve her vocabulary.

Gbemiisola was such a fast learner. She had a thing for picking up things quickly and effortlessly. She was an average student. Even though she wasn’t fluent in English like other kids, I didn’t let that affect our friendship. Whenever she came around, I would help her with her assignment. And then, we would play games and snap selfies together.

One beautiful Sunday, Gbemisola came to my house. Usually, she’d always come with her assignment. But that day, she came with so many bottle lids instead. You know, those blue caps that tighten the covers of recycled water bottles? I was surprised and asked her what she planned to do with them. To my even greater surprise, she said she wanted to make a handbag out of them. A handbag? With bottle lids? I didn't know what to say. Deep down, I thought she might be joking.

Lo and behold, she sat down and started working wonders with her hands. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I was shocked. I mean, how did this little girl learn to do this? Who taught her? How did she even start? I had a million and one questions running through my mind. I was even more shocked when she finished it. She made a beautiful hand bag from bottle lids. It was really beautiful. When she was done with it, I wanted her to make her happy because I was really impressed. So, I gave her one thousand naira for her hard work.

When her mom came back, I showed her what her daughter did. She told me that what I just saw was just the tip of an iceberg. Apparently, Gbemisola is a talented girl. Her mom told me that she’d been making things from needle and thread- sewing beautiful dresses for her toys and doing all sorts of crafts with her hands. Definitely, that kid has a bright future ahead.

Kids nowadays are far more intelligent than they were before like this generation is beyond our expectations.

Congratulations, you received an ecency upvote through the curator @sahi1. Keep spreading love through ecency

I think children get more intelligent through what they are exposed to. In this jet age, you never can dispute that children are faster in reasoning.

WOW 😲! This is so good of her to know how to do things like that bag. The kids of this generation I think are different from us. I don't know why. Maybe because we are in a computer age.
Thanks for sharing

I think children of this generation are creative. They can do the doable with their hands. This is good of her.
