Rewards are given to individuals for a work well done or for an outstanding performance, these rewards in turn serves as a motivation to the recipients. On an ideal note reward is not bad but these days the system of chosing who to be rewarded has been watered in many institution.
Just yesterday while I was gisting with my son he called my attention to the kind of gift he is expecting from us at the end of the term.. LoL, he said he needs a building block, aah. Are you now the one to tell us the kind of gift that you want to receive? Come first first before we can gift you something not necessarily what you mentioned.
For instance, in my kids school at the end of the academic session the school organizes what is called speech and prize giving day. On this said date lots of gift is being given to the pupil's based on their academic performance. Ranging from the play class to the senior classes and to the teachers. A times I get to wonder how these teachers am correctly ascertain who comes what in the class because some of these pupils don't respond to them during exams. For instance during exams last term my daughter refused to respond to her Aunty during exams and at the end we used biscuits and Bobo before she could respond.
On my own opinion giving out monetary rewards to students is not a good idea for me because it may somehow lead to lobbying or something close to that. What will go down well with me is for best performing students to be placed under scholarship. In our school we already made an arrangement of how best performing pupils will be rewarded, what we agreed with the management is for the best in each class to be placed under scholarship. Which is to be in free education for a term. As rewards are good motivators academic performance are better rewarded with a scholarship.
In my children's school they reward best performing pupils with note books and textbooks which is better off than giving a cash prize. A day will come when those money will get finished but knowledge cannot be exhausted. When those kind of prizes are given at least you will be sure that the kids will directly benefit from it, but if it is the cash the parents may be the ones to use it and may not give a good account of it. Some parents who there wards perform so well in school don't have the means to provide for their wards school fees or the materials and these kind of prizes will be a great relief to them. To also help the kids not to be money centered that is expecting money for any little good performance it's better another means is used.
A better reward for a good academic performance is to make ways for more knowledge to be added which will also be a challenge to other students to setup too. At least as my son is expecting a reward at the end of the term it has helped him to setup and reduce lots of play because he already knows that rewards are given for excellent performance.
