There was a time when the weather was predictable and times when we were sure of the seasons but things have changed a lot from what they used to be. We now experience rain at the least expected time and harmattan when we aren't expecting it, science has an explanation for it all and I fear how things would turn out if this climate change of a thing continues like this.
In the space of a decade, we have experienced changes and the next decade might be completely different from all that we are complaining about now. Will it be better or worse? We can't say until things begin to unfold.
According to science, human activities are responsible for everything happening with the weather and it's a fact that there is no going back on these things because our population is increasing drastically and there is a need for expansion, we need more roads, engines, foods, houses and others which automatically means, humans can't stop interfering with nature. As it stands, things can get worse than they are now across the world soon.
The weather at my end for some weeks now hasn't been friendly and it has made a lot of things quite difficult for me. I spoke with a fellow Hiver some days ago and shared with her how challenging it was for me to function properly because of the weather. Imagine sweating profusely while trying to write an article or engage with other authors, I don't know how it easy is for others but I find it very difficult to think properly in such a temperature.
It's not the first time we have experienced heat but this was on a whole different level, the weather was so hot to the extent that there is no difference between staying indoor and outdoor.
Just before the heat, the harmattan came suddenly and it was just too much within a short time. We expected it during the festive period but the harmattan was nowhere to be found, a lot of people including myself complained about the excessive cold not knowing that we wouldn't like what was coming after.
I remembered bathing because of the heat when it started and instead of my body cooling off, the sweat doubled. Sleeping properly has been challenging and burning fuel is not an option because of the high cost of gas, the electricity companies aren't helping matters and we barely use electricity for four hours a day.
There were days we didn't even see the light and we had to burn gas but it was really inconveniencing. Just to stay online, I always ensured that my power bank was properly charged and I depended on my rechargeable fan for cool air which didn't have much impact just because the heat was too much.
It eventually rained this morning and we felt relieved. It actually poured for over 3 hours and I couldn't prevent myself from entering the rain just to feel what I had missed for a long time.
There was a huge relief immediately after the rain started, and the heat reduced but do we know what's coming next? From my observation, the weather gets worse every year. It's like the heat or harmattan is always trying to beat the previous year's record and as it stands, we might get more rain than the previous year or barely get enough.
When I was younger, it was easy to say that it would rain for a particular period because it's the season but we can't do that anymore and the unstable weather condition is affecting a lot of things. Many small-scale farmers struggle because of this and like I said earlier, we just have to adapt since there is a slim chance that things will get better with the weather.
Hopefully, we will get more rain in the coming days to eradicate the heat because one rain isn't enough. Global warming is a situation that demands quick attention and this continuous act of negligence will only make things worse.
