For those of you who have been up to date on news about Nigeria, then you’ve most likely heard about the couple of Local Government Areas in Aba that are currently enjoying 24/7 electricity. A plant was built in the city and it’s finally operational, with hopes to accommodate even more LGAs in the coming weeks.
This is a beautiful thing because from what I heard, it’s run by the state government but they also partnered with major stakeholders in the Power industry to ensure that there would always be power supply in the region. On the 26th of February, it was commissioned and since then, there has been no power outage at all.
What does this mean for the rest of us? It means that the dark days may just be over. Within just how many days of its commission, international companies are already looking to set up their plants in Aba and people are already making plans to relocate there which means those with real estate assets in the region are about to hit it big.
My hope is that once other businessmen see how profitable it is to have a stable power supply, they will also want to replicate it in every state of the country. If every senatorial district has its plant that generates constant power, then the issue of power failure would become a thing of the past. If business-minded people take it up, then it will definitely become a major thing.
One of the major reasons foreign companies are pulling out of Nigeria is power, simple and short. Not even electricity. The cost of powering their machines through generators due to the high cost of fuel and diesel is disheartening. Once that issue is taken care of, other things will fall into place. And as we all know, the more industries and people in the area, the more electricity bills the area will accumulate. And the power plants will be the ones to get all this money!
The only bad side I can see to something like this is when everything solely gets into the hands of businessmen and they will do all they can to take and take from us. After all, that’s what we’re seeing in major brands like the telecoms and cement giants, they keep shooting their prices high for no reason at all and they reduce both the quality and quantity of their products. If businessmen are given such freedom, they will rob us all blind!
So, while this is a beautiful thing, my hope is that there will be a governing body that will regulate the prices. The way we have a regulating body for the price of petrol. One company can’t just wake up one day and decide to increase their tariffs by 120%, such a thing will be illegal and can cause you to lose your company. Let’s place power in the hands of businessmen. If there is one thing I know for sure, when it comes to profits, businessmen will move heaven and hell to make it work. And with a regulatory body keeping them in check, it will be smooth sailing all over the country.
Now, imagine we have plants like the one in Aba scattered only across major cities of the country. Just in major cities. Then, the Nigerian generating stations will power up the rural areas and the rest of the country. Instead of one company doing everything, let little pockets of companies do little by little. And just like that, the entire country would be powered up!
But then, what am I saying? All this is wishful thinking. But I’m sure that if it’s started in Aba, then it will definitely spread to the rest of the country especially when people have seen how beneficial it is. And as I said before, the dark days are gradually getting behind us.
