You see, I’ve always wondered what the world would be like if guns ceased to exist. Not like they were banned or became controlled, they simply vanished from existence. What will that mean for humanity? Will it be a good thing, or it will be a bad thing?
Because I don’t think anyone needs to be reminded of just how bad the menace of guns is to society. No one is safe when it comes to guns and there is no move on earth that can save you when you have a gun at point-blank range pointed at your face. A lot of the world’s problems today have to do with guns, the easy access to them, the ease of operation, and just how easy it is to use to take a life. I think all of this constitutes why guns are really dangerous.
But then, if we’re being honest with ourselves, we know very well that guns are not the problem. No weapon ever used in mass destruction is ever the problem, because those weapons don’t have minds of their own, they don’t have feelings and they’re just like the law, they’re blind. That’s why the gun that’s pointed at an enemy can just as easily be pointed at a friend. Nothing changes for the weapon, it’s just another Tuesday.
We humans are the ones who make guns dangerous. If a gun is found on the street, people will look at it with curiosity but not with fear. They might be terrified that someone who owns a gun lives in their neighborhood and they have no idea who he is, they might be terrified that the owner of the gun might come back for it and it might not be good news for any of it. Every fear that they feel will somehow be connected to their fellow human because as long as that gun is on the ground and untouched, it’s as good as a stone or a blade of grass. Nothing is going to happen.
But that story changes the moment the gun enters someone’s hands. At that moment, it becomes really dangerous because that person can choose to pull the trigger. No weapon in this world can fire on its own, even the most advanced weapon system still requires a human element to give command before it can be fired. That tells you that on their own, they’re useless and powerless.
So, will guns ceasing to exist change anything? No, it won’t. Guns are only just the tip of the iceberg, losing them won’t make any difference. There are still bombs, missiles, and the like. But even if all that were lost as well, the truth is that humans will always find a reason to kill each other and as a result, they will keep on coming up with more creative ways of killing themselves.
A time might come when guns would become obsolete, just like swords and daggers. It would only mean that they’ve found weapons that are more powerful than guns, powerful enough to make them old school.
Honestly, this is how things have always been, right from the get. I don’t think anything will change now. We might try talking peace all we want, but there are those who will never feel safe unless they have a gun in their possession. There are also others who will simply have guns simply because their neighbors have and no one knows tomorrow. Violence has always been in our nature as humans, and as it stands, we can only do the little we can to avoid it.
