2019. Back when “freedom” wasn’t a political debate, it was just the ability to go outside without worrying if someone would cough on your groceries. Gas was cheaper, masks were for Halloween, and “social distancing” was something you did from your in-laws.
I don’t even remember what we’d been doing that day, probably something epic like grabbing groceries or arguing about which Netflix show to binge. But on the drive home, only a few blocks away, or iin our village more corrrect, a few fields away, we spotted it. A thunderstorm rolling in.
And not just any thunderstorm. This was the kind of sky that makes you pull over, grab your phone, and pretend you’re a National Geographic photographer… except without the press pass, the budget, or the camel.
No big camera, no tripod, just an iPhone and the audacity to believe I could capture Mother Nature’s drama before she started throwing lightning bolts at me. Spoiler: I think I nailed it!
Corn stalks stood tall like green soldiers, swaying in that pre-storm wind that whispers, “Hope you brought the laundry in.” (Which we hadn’t, of course). Hay bales dotted the horizon like giant shredded-wheat cereal pieces, silently judging me for my carb intake (yeah, already back then…). And that sky… layers of gray and blue stacked up like a moody cake that’s about to collapse.
There’s something about moments like this, they’re proof you don’t need a fancy setup to capture magic. You just need to notice it. And maybe be willing to stand in a field long enough for your shoes to get muddy.
So here’s the takeaway, whether you’re holding a $5,000 camera (which I still wished I was holding back then) or just the same phone you use to tweet your lunch, the only way to miss a shot like this… is not to take it. The storm will pass, the fields will change, but the shot you don’t take? That one’s gone forever. Better to take it with your phone, than not at all. Who said that again? The best camera is the one you have with you. This is the proof of that statement!
Back in my day, we called that missing the moment. Now we call it content FOMO. Same thing.
