Let me tell you about my friend Precious!!
I met her one Tuesday at night class.
There I was, shivering from the cold breeze of the night, wrapped up in a blanket and my red hoodie, trying my hardest to memorize Virginia Henderson’s definition of Nursing. I was seated in the front row of the physiology auditorium at 12:25 AM, with my trusty bottle of ice coffee, in the midst of other students who were also preparing for exams.
The hall was so silent; I could hear the loud, persistent chirping of crickets from outside. At least it was silent until the doors opened and a group of people walked in. They were four guys and three girls.
For some reason, my gaze rested on the petite, dark-skinned girl; she looked so pretty and happy. On one hand, she held some books, and on the other, she carried an almost finished bottle of Pepsi.
They all eventually settled down somewhere at the back. Sometime during the course of the night, the girl with the Pepsi bottle moved her things and found her way to the seat directly beside mine.
She said hi, I said hi, and that was that. We both went back to reading, but I noticed that every so often, she would take a sip of the Pepsi drink. It got me confused because if I were the one drinking that, I would have slept almost immediately.
The next morning, when we were about to leave, I inquired about how she could stay awake while drinking something with so much sugar. She smiled and said she actually added a pack of instant coffee to the Pepsi. That was her secret to staying awake throughout the night.
It got me scared because that sounded like a deadly combination. But she said she’d been taking it since year one during nights like these. Well, if it had worked for her so far, then who was I to feel otherwise?
We left the hall together, and on our way back to our hostels, we found out that we stayed in the same building complex. We went up the stairs, and as I was about to climb the second flight of stairs, she stopped and told me she had reached her floor.
“Oh. Well, I’m Ifunanya, and you are?” I asked, stretching out my free hand to her.
“I am Precious” she said with a huge smile, taking my hand and shaking it. We then proceeded to part ways.
Ever since then, we have always sat beside each other in night class. Eventually, we became quite close, and I got to know more about her. Apparently, she is the middle child of seven. She has three younger brothers who she adores, and she loves children so much.
I was kind of thrown aback whenever we hung out outside of night class because she was bright and bubbly and actually loved to talk, as opposed to the very quiet girl I usually met up with at night. She was also the president of a drama theatre group on campus.
She ended up being my very extroverted friend who managed to drag me out to multiple events, both on and off campus. If not for her, I would have probably not met a lot of people I know now.
She is also the reason I go to church every Sunday. Come to find out, she is well rounded spiritually, and honestly, she is just a bright light to everyone she encounters. We have kept in touch to date.
