A Digital Superstition

in Digital Lifestyle2 days ago

When it seemed like the subject of superstition could be nothing more than what exist through what we've come to hear and know from the physical world, it's amazing how much this really transcended well into the digital world. I mean, they should be a subject of the physical in collaboration with some spiritual connotation, but having it all up in the digital world? This only tells me much of how the digital world is one vast universe, where almost everything could find place and take root even.

I've not been one to do well with superstitions. A number of them I heard while growing up that even at the age—though with a little thought and maybe a considerable belief into some—they were just weird stories. Stories that later on remained as such only. Something about this is how it gets well articulated into a person's mind during their childhood stage. I guess it's something that makes it very enchanting to the one upholding it. It's a working on the mind, and should it prevail, the individual has no choice but to flow.

I was watching a movie recently that made me think on this matter. It included some form of belief on a futuristic statement made, one that a group or sect of the people considered as superstitious. And through this prompt also, my mind racked back to some superstitions I did come across on the digital space. They were very popular some years back, constantly filling up the digital world; the social media spaces.

It occured more on Facebook for me, then had an influx into WhatsApp as well. I could hardly get by some scrolling time on the Facebook platform without seeing one of those, popping up in my feed. I didn't wonder much though at beginning; how if I don't forward some message, like or comment on some post—composed by who, from where—I would end up with seven bad years of hardship, diseases, heavy toil and unspeakable pains. It turned like an obligation to do what was needed, likewise avoid myself the aforementioned calamities and troubles. Funny, huh!

It gets more interesting and intriguing when the story of how one certain man forwarded it and got promoted while another didn't and lost their job or something devastating happened to them, was incorporated. I mean, you can't toy with a child finding his way on the digital space at a time like that and expect not to find fruitful results. Well, adults too were much engaged in doing the bidding of the perpetrators. You could say everyone wanted the good life. It grew more, I kept forwarding, commenting and liking posts almost daily, and it seemed a tiring effort.

Slowly, I was able to see into the superstition. I could look well enough at the messages or posts, and ignored doing the bidding of the sender or perpetrator. It seemed at first that those curses mentioned would come after me, or I could be disadvantaged in some situations for this reason. After waiting and waiting, none came around. Then I saw I've been constantly played. From those periods, such messages were ignored with the whole of my might. It's funny how I find people still sending such these days even. "This thing has failed already", I do think, wondering why many still take the bait.

Digital superstition to an extent was unavoidable while growing up because as you said there are alot of schemes that were orchestrated by greedy and evil minds to lure the younger ones into doing their bidding by all means and some adults still believe in some of this superstitions.
Thank you for sharing @daverick

Yes that's true. It's so unfortunate that many are still falling into doing their bids today.

I think it’s all in people’s heads and those people behind those accounts should be ashamed of taking advantage of people’s religions and beliefs, fr.

Seriously, that's it. I feel it's a kind of exploitative game they play with people's minds using their beliefs and all. I just hope people will know better. Thank you for your comment @abenad.

It seems like fear is what makes someone forward the message. Interesting story, thanks for sharing.

Yes, it's a fear thing. And that's what they aim at, those who perpetrate such. Thank you for reading @nnurdiani.
