Hello everyone :)!
My family owns a house (that my dad grew up in) tucked away (we like to say Bogu iza nogu [behind God’s legs] in Croatian🤣) in the beautiful Žumberak mountains, and every year, we put our hands in the soil and grow a variety of fruits and vegetables on this land :). There’s something incredibly grounding (no pun intended lolol) about being connected to nature like this and this weekend marked the official start of our planting season!
Before we could start, the land had to be properly prepared: plowed and rototilled to make it ready for planting! Once the soil was soft and healthy, we got to work.
Yesterday, we planted our first batch: potatoes, lettuce, onions, and carrots! Mu dad’s man of honor came to help because he has the appropriate machinery for it :)! When I remember we used to it by hand😣😵💫… These are always among the first to go in the ground (sometimes we even start earlier if the vegetable/fruit asks it), and they mark the beginning of the season :).
The rest of our vegetables will be planted as the timing becomes right. Coming soon: cucumbers, cabbage, parsley, peppers, kale, corn, tomatoes, beetroot, beans, green beans, chili peppers, and a lot more surprises along the way ;)!
Today, we also hammered wooden beams into the ground and connected wires between them to keep the wild boars and other animals out! They might be cool to look at from a distance, but trust me, they can destroy a whole garden in 5 minutes😭.
I’m especially excited about my chili peppers this year hehe I can already imagine them growing big and spicy under the summer sun!
I’ll make sure to keep you all updated as the season progresses. There’s something magical about watching the garden go from bare earth to rows of green life. Stay tuned for more muddy hands, fresh vegetables, and a few sunburns along the way!
