How are you all doing? I believe you have been creating memorable memories of this week as you go about your daily activities either at work or during your leisure time. Its been a great week so far for me and I'm happy with the level of accomplishments I had recorded. In this post, I will be sharing with you all my experience last weekend as i visited my parents.

I had the chance to pay a visit to my parents after some months away and it was a quick refreshing escape from my usually day-to-day routine. I arrived at their house quite early on Saturday and after spending some quality time with them I left on Sunday evening. Well, it was not a long vacation but it was certainly one filled with so much amazing memories. More importantly, the short change of environment was highly utilized.

One of the major activities I did was helping my mother to feed her broiler chickens. Broiler is a type of chicken usually with white feathers and they are specifically reared for meat. One unique quality of these chicken is that they grow rapidly within few weeks and they can be ready for sale once they attain the desired size. It was quite interesting to help her out with some of her tasks and to know about her daily experiences as a small scale poultry farmer.

My mom started her poultry business as a full-time business after retiring from the civil service about three years ago. It is not as easy as it seems but she ensures she feeds them as at when due and supply fresh and clean water always. There is quite a lot of work involved in ensuring that the chicken are healthy especially during this intense hot weather. They don't like a hot weather at all so it is important to always keep their water cool by adding some ice blocks occasionally. There are so many poultry farmers who stop rearing birds during the dry season because of this challenge but she is still keeping up with the frequent monitoring of the birds to avoid any loss or casualty.

In the few days that I spent with her she updated me about how she has been managing the business and some of the challenges she faced in recent time. This has to do with a chicken seller in one of the markets close to her that came to pack about 50 birds from her last batch but he only made a part payment and has refused to pay completely after about 6 weeks. He kept on promising to balance her as soon as he gets the money he's expecting but she hasn't seen him for awhile and he refuses to pick his calls. Even though she's disturbed she emphasised that she believes he will pay as he is a regular customer.

Well, I supported her business by doing business with her. I bought four of her chickens at the rate of #8000 each and I remove the feathers in the morning before I left. It was much easier for me to take along with me that way than moving about with a life chicken. I will be storing them in my freezer and use them to make meals in bit. It will definitely last me for more than two months. Hopefully there's constant power supply to keep the freezer cold.

This weekend further reminded me of the importance of taking a break, even if its a short one, away from your comfort zone or a place you are over familiar with and experience life from another different window. It may have been a short change of environment but it was refreshing and worthwhile. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

Thank You For Your Time and See You in My Next One.

@tipu curate

Nice
Those broiler are big and am sure it will be profitable in some days

Yes, they are over 6 weeks - they are quite big and weighty. They are up for sale already tho

@debbie-ese A very good feeling as a means of part-time labourer for your parents and likewise I know that you are really learning gradually from your mom and this will also enlighten you more about keeping poultry yourself other animals with your husband. Being a helping hand also reminds me of somewhere in Obafem Awolowo University Teaching and Research Farm where I did part of my industrial training as of that time, where I did 3 months of my training with the Poultry section, the rabbit section, Grasscutter section and also the sheep and goat section.

A piece of advice is that even when you are doing this as a laborer as a learner and also as a gradual farmer you need to also progress by practicing it yourself so that you will be part of the farmer no matter what.

Hello @mattsanthonyit,indeed I can say i have one or two experiences about running a poultry business with the few times I have visited my mother through the little chit-chat that we have.

Thanks for stopping by.

Perhaps, getting into agriculture may seems more interesting when you step into it slowly. We have more ladies and women get into agriculture practices nowadays too

With time I intend to start a mini poultry as well. Maybe not for commercial purpose for a start but for only the purpose of consumption. Then later on I can increase the numbers for sale.
