From Spain, we move over to Somalia [the death of Mohamed Siad Barre]. Do you also know that on this day in 1995, Mohamed Siad Barre, a former Somalian President who came to power via a military coup in 1969 and was also toppled in 1995 via a bloody civil war, died in Lagos, Nigeria.
From Somalia, we move over to Israel [the death of Teddy Kollek]. Now, on this day in 2007, Teddy Kollek, an Israeli politician and one time Mayor of Jerusalem from 1965 to 1993, died in Jerusalem, Israel.
From Israel, we move over to Japan [the birthday of Kaifu Toshiki]. Do you know that on this day in 1931, Kaifu Toshiki, a Japanese politician and one time Prime Minister of Japan from 1989 to 1991, was born in Ichinomiya, Japan.
From Japan, we move over to Pakistan [the birthday of Arshad Nadeem]. Do you know that on this day in 1997, Arshad Nadeem, the first Pakistani track-and-field athlete to win an Olympic medal (a gold medal in Javelin) at the 2024 Paris Games, was born in Mian Channu, Punjab, Pakistan.
Gentlemen, we'll round off our today's look in history from Japan [the death of Noma Hiroshi]. Do you know that on this day in 1991, Noma Hiroshi, a Japanese novelist and writer of Shinkū chitai (1952; Zone of Emptiness), a book widely considered by many as one of the finest war novels written after World War II, died in Tokyo, Japan.
