This week, I choose lemongrass as my entry for the #hivegardenqotw because its one of the easiest and most rewarding plants I grow. I’ve been planting lemongrass in my yard for a years now, it never fails to give back, heath benefits and even income for our family.
When I first planted lemongrass, I simply set these talks in the soil, and others in plastic bottles, watered them lightly and let them grow. One of the best things about lemongrass is how low-maintenance it is. Even if you leave it alone for a while, it sprouts new shoots within a few days. Watching those tiny green shoots grow gradually into strong stalks give me immense joy. Every time I check my little garden, I feel proud and at peace.

After three months. The lemongrass is ready to harvest. We harvest regularly every three months, and the yield is so generous. Sometimes, it becomes a source of small but meaningful income for us. Example, when we have no extra money, I harvested one bundle of lemongrass around 20 kilos and delivered it to a local lechon vendor. At 15 peso per kilo, I earned 300 pesos right away. It may seem small for some, but for us it was a big help for our needs. This is why I consider lemongrass so rewarding, it gives in so many ways.
Some of the harvest we keep for home use, making tea, adding flavor to dishes, and even using as a natural mosquito repellent. I personally tested it in our area which is near a creek and has a lot of mosquitoes and it really works!

Lemongrass is more than just a kitchen herb. Base on my research and traditional use, it offers many health benefits, it can aid digestion, help reduce inflammation, relieve stress, boost immunity and lower blood sugar levels. Its essential oils are also knowing for antibacterial and antifungal properties.

For beginners I highly recommend lemongrass. Its easy to grow, requires minimal effort, produce regularly every three months, support health, helps repel mosquitoes, and can even provide an income. My little lemongrass garden brings happiness, wellness and value to our lives. Truly, it’s a plant that keeps on giving. 💚
