Teaching really is a lot of fun, I do miss those days! Central line placement, what a fun procedure and so valuable for the interns to learn. The days of the Swan-Ganz are pretty much gone, those were a lot of fun to do. Keep up the good work, teaching interns and residents is one of the best parts of medicine. Patient education is what follows unless you're in a teaching hospital!
I've actually seen my colleagues use Swan-Ganz catheters once, but I honestly forgot the indication. It does exist! I know that our cardiologists like to use them.
Patient education is somewhat I definitely enjoy, even if they're just snippets of relevant knowledge. And I don't mean talking down to them with instructions, but actually explaining why certain things about their condition work the way they do. It's fun seeing the light bulb go on when I give a clear explanation for something they sometimes haven't understood for years, possibly due to inadequate communication!
Pulmonary hypertension is best diagnosed with one along with most right side heart issues. It's rarely used now, but when I was an intern it was used in most ICU patients!
