Actually, it is more fantasy than reality. I don't think he actually witnessed the tsunami wave he was depicting. Despite being very successful in life, he was in poverty at the time, and old, so he was grasping at straws, doing anything that he thought might gain popularity. It was kind of a copy of two works that came 30 years before. He just did it better than anyone else.
