A Filipino lady entered my chamber as the last patient on Saturday night. Two more Filipino ladies accompanied her. The patient was holding her left upper limb with her right hand. The left upper limb was being hung with clothes like a collar and cuff sling. All of them were wearing their work uniforms. I didn't ask about their workplace, but it seemed they came directly from their work.
"What happened?"
Filipinos know English well! The attending lady (the patient was in excruciating pain) told me that the patient fell from a height and got hit to multiple sites of her body. However, the injury to her left elbow and forearm was severe. She couldn't extend her elbow. She wasn't even allowing anyone to touch the affected site; meaning excruciating pain!
I ordered an X-ray to rule out any fracture! The attendant brought the X-ray film to my chamber. Luckily, there was no fracture! When I told her that there was no fracture, she almost shouted with joy, saying "Alhamdulillah" instead of saying "Thank God."
When we live in a land for a long time, consciously or subconsciously, we accept a few cultures of that land gradually. Being a Muslim land, here in Oman, we greet each other according to the Muslim culture saying "Assalamu Alaikum". And, we reply to it by saying "Walikum Assalam". Similarly, if something good happens, we thank our creator saying "Alhamdulillah" [meaning all praise and thanks to Allah].
Today's attendant expressed her joy according to the Islamic culture saying "Alhamdulillah". She could have said "Thank God" because both mean the same thing.
