What would the 1990's have been without Xena: The Warrior Princess? The show started in 1995 developed in part by the legendary Sam Raimi of Evil Dead fame. Lucy Lawless launched her career as Xena and has been a big name TV actress ever since. It also starred Renee O'Connor as Xena's sidekick Gabrielle. The program showed Xena fighting the ancient gods and evil villains of the day to protect the innocent, and it was a lot of fun!
The series also starred Raimi's younger brother Ted who went on to have a successful career as a character actor. There were a lot of celebrity cameos throughout the show and helped launch the careers of several actors.
The fun came to an end in 2001, but it was a fun show to watch. I still am surprised there have been no reboot attempts at such a successful series. After all, why create something new when you can just steal an old show?
Xena even appeared on the Simpsons, and apparently Lucy Lawless can fly!
And in case you haven't heard of 90's Friday, it's a fun weekly event where you can share anything from the 1990's. You just need to use the tag #ninetiesfriday or post in the Nineties Friday community. One winner wins some HSBI! Also not a bad idea to do a shoutout to @geneeverett !

Hercules The Legendary Journeys debuted in 1995 starring Kevin Sorbo as Hercules. Filmed in New Zealand for it's fitting scenery the show quickly became a hit. The acting was pretty good and there no lack of very attractive actresses, including one Lucy Lawless who of course was Xena. The show came to and end in 1999, but it's still fun to watch some of the reruns on streaming.
Now, as a silver collector and an amateur history buff I couldn't resist sharing one of these coins. I don't own one, but I really should change that. This has Alexander the Great on the obverse (front) and Hercules with the fur of the Nemean lion on the reverse (back). These coins were mass produced in silver and gold in the time of Alexander and so aren't too expensive in silver. You can get a nice one for around $400, gold will cost much, much more!

I've always wanted a coin from the era of Alexander, I'll have to put that higher on my list. Some others I want are from the reign of Charlemagne since he was my great, great, great...... grandfather. That one is going to be very hard to find and expensive. Even more difficult to find is his grandfathers coinage, Charles Martell (Charles The Hammer) which I've been searching out for years too. Recently I added to the list one from the reign of Vlad III Dracula of Transylvania. Then again I have a very long list of things I want to buy, but am eternally short of funds to buy them all.
This last Tuesday was all about women led bands, I decided to go with the same vibe for Friday from the 90's.
Jewel
Jewel spent most of her childhood living in rural Alaska before moving to California looking to start a music career. For a time she was living in her car while working at a coffee house in San Diego, California. Through hard work she connected with other musicians and was eventually offered a recording contract. Her album Pieces Of You released in 1995 and was a huge success, this song come from that album, "You Were Meant For Me":
10,000 Maniacs
This band formed in Jamestown, Yew York in the US in 1981. They struggled to find a following until 1987 with their breakout hit album In My Tribe, which was their third full album. They continued with success into the early 90's with the release of Our Time in Eden. After that lead singer Natalie Merchant left the band to focus on a solo career as so often happens with successful bands. But this was off Our Time in Eden and called "These Are Days":
Alanis Morissette
This Canadian singer/ songwriter became a major force in the music scene in the mid 1990's with the release of her third album Jagged Little Pill. The album produced several chart topping hits and many female artists have cited it as an influence in their music. One particular artist that we all know well took her vocal styles from Morissette, that would be Shakira. She'll also be included today. Back to Alanis, this song is "You Oughta Know":
Britney Spears
She started her career as a child actor on the Mickey Mouse Club, but in 1999 she changed her style completely. She released Baby One More Time that took the world by storm. She became one of the top pop artists in the world and stayed there for many long years. Sadly, she later developed schizophrenia that pretty much ended her musical career. Here's her first huge hit "Baby One More Time":
Baby One More Time
Shakira
This Colombian singer/song writer released her third album Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet) in 1995 making her a star throughout the Spanish speaking world. However, in 1998 her fourth album Dónde Están los Ladrones? (Where are the thieves?) made her a super star worldwide and opened the doors to her English language singing career. Part of her family heritage came from Lebanon and so she likes to embrace those roots in some of her music as well as through dance. You see it well in this song "Ojos Asi" off her fourth album:
That will wrap up this 90's Friday post. I hope you enjoyed it! Please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. Thanks everyone for all of your support! Have a great weekend everyone!
