The Splinterlands Town Hall has just been dropped a few hours ago and I've been listening to what's the new and upcoming things for the project. I must say it is definitely one of the best one so far in recent memory just by the exciting things they've announced.
New Skins

FIrst, I think the upcoming skin offerings are a bit different and more interesting than the previous themed ones. Instead of having a specific design aligned to an event like Halloween or Easter, these ones reimagine what the past and future of some Splinterlands characters are like.

We have Rila Fen as a raggedy thief, Jicarilla as a young student, the Caravan Guard as future undead, it's all very clever designs that I think are far more amusing to me than others, in my opinion. I usually dismiss skins as a cosmetic that I can live without but I'm considering picking some up if it is offered on my favorite cards.
Hybrid Cards

Now this is another groundbreaking moment for Splinterlands as a new "hybrid card" is apparently in the works. So what it is, is a dual purpose card that can be used in ranked play as well as in lands, both with specific abilities depending on where it will be utilized. So there's this intruiging flip animation that happens when you select which "mode" of the card you are going to activate.
What's more intriguing is that it will also introduce the mining of other cryptocurrencies in land, with this one being tied to the electroneum coin. I'm guessing this would fetch a very high premium in the open market once it is released simply due to its multiple functionalities.
DAO Ownership of Splinterlands
Finally, there's the transfer of Splinterlands ownership to the DAO making it a truly player-owned web3 project. Personally, my takeaway from this is that it will further legitimize the significance of holding SPS tokens no matter how small it is, because each token represents a fragment or shard of the entire Splinterlands project. You can take pride in calling yourself a co-owner of the game.
With this, Splinterlands has once again set the bar as to what web3 games should be about, not just asset ownership but the entire game itself. The play to earn model is dead. Welcome to the play to own era of gaming.
