Hello guys, this is my entry to the "Splinterlands Social Media Challenge!". If you want to participate and read more about the challenge, click here.
The Rebellion edition came out last month and with it, there came a lot of new summoners and monsters. There are some meta-changing abilities and gameplay changes too which made it more interesting and challenging at the same time. One of the keys to success in this game is to know all of your units and how they can be best used in the battle. And here is me trying to educate myself and others with these posts that talk about one of the new units that came out during this sale. In this post, we will talk about a Common Neutral unit, the Grimbardun Fighter.
Let's start by looking at its stats in detail.

Grimbardun Fighter
GrimBardun Fighter is a common neutral unit that came out during the recent Rebellion sale. It is a high mana cost unit costing a whooping 9 mana to use but it comes with some nice stats. It deals significant melee attack damage and comes with armor of its own. Its 'shield' ability makes it a good tank, especially against melee and ranged attackers.
I will show you how I utilized it in one of my battles.

My Lineup
This is my lineup for the battle
It was a 30-mana cap battle and only had the "Melee Mayhem" ruleset which meant that any Melee attack monster could attack from any position during this battle.
Only Death and Dragon elements were active during this battle. I went with Dolfar Darflak as it cost just 3 mana so I could spend more on my lineup.

Grimbardun Fighter was my tank for this battle. It was a 30 mana battle so I had enough mana to spend on this tank, that's why I used this battle. As the ruleset was favoring melee attackers, its 'shield' ability would soak the damage received from them and it would last longer against them. That's exactly what happened during this battle.
Next on my lineup was Magi of Chaos, a mage that dealt 2 magic attack damage and cost just 6 mana. However, it only comes with 5 health of its own. This added a lot of attacking strength to my lineup.
Doctor Blight was placed in the third position in my lineup. It is another neutral unit that deals magic attack damage. I used mages to surprise my opponents as they would be preparing against melee attackers. This unit's affliction and 'camouflage' abilities make it a legendary attacker and a very useful weapon in your battles.
Next in my lineup was Spirit Hoarder which is yet another mage dealing 1 magic attack damage. It just costs 3 mana and comes with a 'Triage' ability which deals the monster on the friendly back-line who has taken the most damage. I used it to secure my backline firmly.
Silent Sha-vi came in the fifth position. It is an impressive attacker dealing 2 melee attack damage to the enemy back as it comes with the 'sneak' ability. Having a sneaky unit in the lineup helps to take down those weaker units from the enemy lineup which can cause some trouble. This only costs 5 mana and comes with good health and speed too.
In the end, I placed the Corpse Fiend, a zero mana unit dealing 1 melee attack damage. I placed it at the back to secure my back line and shield my Silent Sha-vi. I didn't expect it to last longer as it comes with just 1 health but it can still take one or two hits and its job is fulfilled.
Now that my lineup was set, it was time for battle.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube.

My Strategy
This was a challenging battle with just Death and Dragon elements allowed and having 30 mana to work with. The melee mayhem ruleset made it more interesting. I expected my opponent to use a lot of melee attackers and that's why I used the GrimBardun Fighter as my tank. Its 'shield' ability can severely decrease the enemy's attacking strength on this unit.
To surprise my opponent I didn't go for a lot of melee attackers but used mages which can ignore the shields and armour too. I was expecting my opponent to use a lot of armor in this battle.
Also, I used the Silent Sha-vi to attack the enemy back-line which is sometimes vulnerable to attacks, especially in lower leagues.
This strategy, as you will see, worked in my favor and gave me a comfortable win in the end.

My opponent went with an interesting strategy. They used the Blunder Overseer which has a lot of health but no attacks of its own. Most of their units were doing just 1 attack damage which was not a problem for my Grimbardun Fighter as it had the shield ability and those didn't do any damage.
Only their Cursed Windeku was able to damage my tank so it was quite obvious from the start that this battle would be soon over.
The first few rounds were spent on just eliminating my opponent's tank which had a ton of health and extra armour. My Silent Sha-vi did a great job of eliminating the weaker units from the enemy lineup while everyone else was busy attacking each other's tanks.
After the demise of their tank in round 3, it was quite clear that this battle wouldn't last much longer and that's what happened. My opponent could only manage to take down the Corpse Fiend in this battle.
I had better attacking strength and defensive capability mostly thanks to the shield ability of my tank GrimBardun Fighter which lasted the entire duration of that battle and soaked most of the enemy attacks easily. This was an easy win for me.
Conclusion
As you just saw in the above battle, GrimBardun Fighter is useful in some situations. It costs 9 mana but justifies that cost with its great attacking and defensive capabilities. It shines against melee and ranged attackers so it is good to use them with those rulesets and conditions that force us to use just melee or ranged monsters.
The only drawback is its relatively lower health even after costing 9 mana and using it in low mana cap battles will be much harder as you have to spend most of the mana on this alone. But even with that, you can still use it to some extent.
But most times, it can be used as a good tank in most of the battles, especially in mid-high cap battles. I recommend it... it is worth a test at least...let me know if you find it useful as well.
