Yesterday, I ranted about fog—both in the weather and in our brains. Today, let’s talk creativity. You know, that thing we all claim to have but sometimes disappears faster than your motivation to hit the gym.
There are days when I can wander around a city for hours, surrounded by breathtaking historical buildings, bustling street life, and details that scream “TAKE A PHOTO,” yet… nothing. Nada. Zip. It’s like my creative brain decided to take an unscheduled nap.
And then, there are days when I’m early for a meeting, stop near a random field of grain, and—BOOM—I take a gazillion different pictures (see above for evidence).
What’s the lesson here? Creativity isn’t just some magical force that shows up when it feels like it. It’s a muscle. And just like those abs you swear you’ll work on someday, if you don’t train it, it won’t show up when you need it.
How to Keep Your Creative Brain Awake (and Not on Permanent Vacation)
Show Up Every Day – Inspiration is great, but habits are better. Waiting for inspiration is like waiting for the perfect time to start a diet. Just do the damn thing.
Change Your Perspective – Literally and figuratively. If your usual creative space is feeling stale, get out. Shoot something different. Write in a different place. Try a new angle (yes, that applies to both photography and life).
Steal Like an Artist – Not literally (calm down, ethics police). But look at others’ work, analyze what makes it great, and then remix it in your own way.
Embrace the “Bad” Days – Some days, you’ll take a thousand photos and hate all of them. Some days, you won’t take any at all. That’s part of the game. Keep playing.
Create Before You Consume – Scrolling Instagram isn’t creating. (Yes, I see you.) Make something first before getting lost in the black hole of social media.
At the end of the day, creativity is like that field of grain—sometimes golden and endless, sometimes dull and lifeless. But the more you show up, the more you train your brain to see opportunities, the more you’ll create, no matter where you are.
Now, go make something. Your creative muscle isn’t going to train itself. 🚀
