You reach forty, fifty, and the world seems to take stock. Magazines, social media, even conversations at meetings, become a list of possessions and achievements. The car, the house, the trips, the awards, the sales. You feel the pressure that your life must be an impressive catalog. I've felt it. The pressure that if you haven't "reached" a certain height, you're somehow deficient. It's a heavy, suffocating lie.
I have learned, often reluctantly, to categorize things as an ancient Stoic might. There are things that are within my control and things that are not. Within my control are the quality of my work, my discipline, my ethics, my effort. Beyond my control are whether a book sells, wins an award, and whether critics love or hate it. Money and recognition fall into the "preferred" category. It's better to have them than not, because they provide comfort and freedom of action.
But they are not necessary for the only thing that truly matters: fulfillment, eudaimonia. That fulfillment can only come from within, from living according to your principles and doing your work well, whatever the external outcome.
The mistake is believing that your value as a man, as a writer, as a human being, increases with external success or decreases without it. If you tie your peace of mind to sales figures or constant approval, you have become a slave. You have surrendered your freedom to the goddess Fortuna, who is fickle and capricious. One day she smiles upon you, and the next she turns her back on you. Building your identity on their smile is like building your house on shifting sands.
I see other writers who pursue success as an end in itself. They change their writing to follow trends, they go to great lengths to appear in the right places, they measure their worth by numbers.
They live in a state of constant anxiety. Because there's always someone ahead of them, always a new trophy they don't have. Their peace is held hostage by their bank account and their reputation. They've confused the map with the territory. The map is the external signs of success. The territory is the work itself, and the person who creates it.
My ambition hasn't disappeared. I want my books to be read. I work hard to make them good and to reach people. But I've separated ambition from servitude.
My peace doesn't depend on whether I achieve it or not. It depends on whether I sat down and worked with integrity today. It depends on whether I can look in the mirror and know that I didn't betray what I believe is a good page for a shortcut to popularity. Success, if it comes, will be received with gratitude, but it won't define me. If it doesn't come, it won't change the fundamental truth: that I am the master of my judgment and my character.
At the end of the day, the only real success is that. Being able to say: "Today I was free. Today my actions were governed by my principles, not by my fear of not having enough." That's not complacency. It's the only true sovereignty that exists.

Llegas a los cuarenta, a los cincuenta, y el mundo parece hacer inventario. Las revistas, las redes sociales, incluso las conversaciones en reuniones, se convierten en una lista de posesiones y logros. El coche, la casa, los viajes, los premios, las ventas. Sientes la presión de que tu vida debe ser un catálogo impresionante. Yo la he sentido. La presión de que si no has "llegado" a cierta altura, eres de alguna manera deficiente. Es una mentira pesada y sofocante.
He aprendido, a menudo a regañadientes, a clasificar las cosas como lo haría un estoico antiguo. Hay cosas que están bajo mi control y cosas que no.
Bajo mi control está la calidad de mi trabajo, mi disciplina, mi ética, mi esfuerzo. Fuera de mi control está si un libro se vende, si gana un premio, si la crítica lo ama o lo odia. El dinero y el reconocimiento entran en la categoría de "preferidos". Es mejor tenerlos que no tenerlos, porque dan comodidad y libertad de acción.
Pero no son necesarios para lo único que importa: la plenitud, la eudaimonia. Esa plenitud solo puede venir del interior, de vivir de acuerdo a tus principios y de hacer bien tu trabajo, sea cual sea el resultado externo.
El error es creer que tu valor como hombre, como escritor, como ser humano, aumenta con el éxito externo o disminuye sin él. Si atas tu paz mental a las cifras de ventas o a la aprobación constante, te has convertido en un esclavo. Has entregado tu libertad a la diosa Fortuna, que es voluble y caprichosa. Un día te sonríe y al siguiente te da la espalda. Construir tu identidad sobre su sonrisa es construir tu casa sobre arena movediza.
Veo a otros escritores que persiguen el éxito como un fin. Cambian su escritura para seguir tendencias, se desviven por aparecer en los sitios correctos, miden su valía por los números.
Viven en un estado de ansiedad permanente. Porque siempre hay alguien por delante, siempre hay un nuevo trofeo que no tienen. Su paz es rehén de su cuenta bancaria y de su reputación. Han confundido el mapa con el territorio. El mapa son los signos externos de éxito. El territorio es la obra en sí, y la persona que la crea.
Mi ambición no ha desaparecido. Quiero que mis libros se lean. Trabajo duro para que sean buenos y para que lleguen a la gente. Pero he separado la ambición de la esclavitud.
Mi paz no depende de si lo logro o no. Depende de si hoy me senté y trabajé con integridad. Depende de si puedo mirar al espejo y saber que no traicioné lo que creo que es una buena página por un atajo hacia la popularidad.
El éxito, si llega, será recibido con gratitud, pero sin que me defina. Si no llega, no cambiará lo fundamental: que soy dueño de mi juicio y de mi carácter.
Al final del día, el único éxito real es ese. Poder decir: "Hoy fui libre. Hoy mis acciones estuvieron gobernadas por mis principios, no por mi miedo a no tener suficiente". Eso no es conformismo. Es la única soberanía real que existe.
