On a yellowish-green leaf filled with traces of life, a cucurbit leaf beetle was enjoying itself. It didn't stay in one spot to feed, but instead examined the entire surface of the leaf. The beetle was so small, it was almost invisible. I almost missed it. If it hadn't been moving around, I might have passed it by. I spotted it as it was about to move on to another spot to chase another insect.
Despite its small size, this beetle is greatly feared by farmers, especially pumpkin and cucumber growers. This beetle greedily eats leaves, flowers, and young stems. It also eats the skin of young fruit. According to information I learned from local farmers, this beetle is very difficult to eradicate once it has taken over a plant. Even more dangerous is when it has already produced larvae to follow. The larvae of this beetle will feed on the plant's roots. This is very dangerous because it disrupts the absorption of water and nutrients in the targeted plant. As a result, the plant will become stunted or even wilt and slowly die.
